World of Warcraft player reaches level cap through pet battles alone

El barfo.

It never fails to amaze us how some MMO players will create extreme challenges in their games — and overcome those challenges. Take Kruithne, a World of Warcraft player who had a dream to level a character from one to 110 doing nothing but pet battles. Seemingly impossible? Well, mission accomplished.

Kruithne posted a screenshot of his level 110 Priest (who is still in her starting gear, natch) as proof. This project took a good chunk of time to accomplish, clocking in at around 117 hours of play time to watch that character crawl up the levels via experienced earned solely through pet battles. The player estimated that it averaged out to be about 10 pet battles per critter, resulting in 797 pets reaching level 25 in the process.

“I pretty much only leveled during the Sign of the Critter buff,” Kruithne explained on Reddit, “and I always keep my Safari Hat on. I had one pet that carried the leveling pet without need for downtime.”

I guess in WoW at least, they /are/ the best, that no one ever was.

This one isn’t shocking to me at all. While I never went all the way to cap, my disdain for WoD had me level 2-3 characters to 100 doing just pet battles and exploration.

One thing I’ll say about WoW… over the years they’ve seemed to have by far the most interesting (some say boring) and varied ways of reaching a level cap than any other MMO on the market.

Like it or not, that says tons about the game when a player has that many options to do that vs all other MMO games that have been out.

Either those other games simply don’t have the path options to try these things or even to their own players, they are just not that interesting to try those things in their favorite MMOs.

*not a WoW player.

Don’t you have to travel to higher level zones to get some of the 797 pets?
Even if you were level appropriate, you still have to travel to the regions with starter gear. That sounds awfully difficult without outside help.
Can you trade for pets on the auction house? Do you get money from pet battles?

Ya, you can buy pets from players.

Unless it’s changed in the few months since I played, the only ones you can sell on the AH are pets that come from items, cards, drops, etc. You cannot sell account-bound items (things from Collector’s Editions) or pets you capture in the wild.

You also cannot use a pet purchased this way unless you’ve also raised a pet to the same level… i.e. if you have a stable full of level 1 pets, you can’t use a level 25 you purchased. There are also only a few of them that enter into the “must have” world… the rest are all cosmetic.

The battle system for pets is actually fairly deep in the game, with a lot of different strategies, match-ups, etc.

I thought about doing this once but figured I didn’t hate myself enough to make that commitment.

I hope it does not make Blizzard “nerf” pet battle xp, some times i feel Blizzard is anti-choice, they want players to level in a one way, dungeons gives too much XP? nerf them, good luck trying to level with dungeons after level 80, Legion invasions in 7.0 gives too much XP? nerf it, then people complained loudly .. they put it back.

I wish they do something i almost sure they’ll never do it: allow multi-paths for leveling, including crafting, fishing and every thing they player do, bring the world quests to the old world and let people level to 100 in the old zones, why not?

I enjoy doing the optional lowbie content in SWTOR for XP.

This is Blizzard’s trademark. You will play the game the way they want you to play it. Period.

You might add to your list flying. Easy to fly and get to quests, knock them off and fly away. Nah. We’re nerfing that puppy by putting it behind a really high achievement wall (as in, by the time you get it, you won’t need it). Enjoy! (We didn’t design all this boring crap just to have you fly over it, turd blossoms.)

They do this with all their games. It’s their stance that they are the only ones who get to say how the game should be played. Anybody out their gets creative with their design or does something they didn’t plan for, they are all over it.

Must be tough to group with that build.

Yeah I got significant XP from pet battles only, I think I even dinged 110 by that.

Considering the massive amounts of XP you can get via pet battles, I’m not sure this is really that much of an achievement. It just takes a lot of time.

Being dedicated to the goal despite taking a long time is the achievement
