Star Citizen’s Around the Verse on the new website and colossal ship migration

28

Big changes are coming to Star Citizen — well, to its website. This week’s episode of Around the Verse explains that the game’s website is being overhauled to make it more functional and responsive for both hardcore backers and newbies who stumble into it and can’t figure out what’s actually playable yet. Spectrum 0.3.5 – that’s Cloud Imperium’s built-from-scratch communication tool – is on the way as well.

Meanwhile, the studios are hard at work on all things 3.0, as the Austin studio check-in outlines, with additional work on mocap, persistent universe animations, the subsumption system, and the new mission manager. There’s also a look at the massive ongoing ship migration project as older ships are updated to the item 2.0 framework, what Producer Ashram Kain calls “one of the largest things that [he thinks] has ever been done in a game, particularly a multiplayer game.”

“Think about the multiplayer games that are out there, I mean you might have a mount in World of Warcraft or Elder Scrolls Online or a house but you don’t fly your house around. You don’t have twenty houses that you fly around and you have to worry about them being damaged and the states they’re all going to be in and how other players are going to interface with them, that’s something we’re having to consider.”

Don’t make me Star Wars Galaxies you bro! The whole episode, plus the lore video from earlier this week, is below.

The faster this comes out the happier I will be

I was a disappointed to see that every single ship will require an entire retrofit from stage 1 for item 2.0 integration, that really seems like they put themselves in a cart before the horse situation.

Ah, but the genius part is, once they make the change for one ship, it carries across all ships for that same function w/o having to modify each ship individually.

I’ll believe that when I see it. I’m sceptical that they would say “an entire retrofit for every single ship” if it was so trivial a matter. They’ve not proved themselves to be geniuses elsewhere so I see no reason to believe they’ll start now :)

I’ll believe that when I see it.

Well, if you watched the video they demonstrated it and explained how it works.

There is nothing “genius” about how any of this game development has been handled.

Seems the original design didn’t account for multi player ships with more that 2 crew so a complete redesign of the system and retrofit had to be done. If you look at around 20:16 on the video you can hear the explanation.

o.O But they’ve known since forever that they would have multicrew with more than 2 crew members, ships like the Constellation were sold during the original pitch and that’s always had more than 2 crew.

cart before the horse is game development in a nutshell.. it’s just normally behind closed doors

I strongly suggest you check the following link made by Captain_Crowbar that does show the change from week to week. Diff for the 3.0 Production Schedule Report
https://www.diffchecker.com/xFvadA7j

You can see in details the following: ITEM 2.0 SHIP CONVERSION – PART 1 is feature completed and ITEM 2.0 SHIP CONVERSION – PART 2 is planned for 9th June (subject to change of course).

Do not be sad… it is for the best. What CIG implement is made to support the all game for the coming years and it is clearly under control.

The tech will absolutely put the candy in our experiences in game . Glad to see that they are implementing it per update. It make sense. @ Joe Blobers- after 3.0 is released do you think we can expect SC to make be officially released by the fall of 2018?

Reader

Based on educated expectation both financial and technical, SQ42 Chapter 1 a big yes.
About SC this is the MMO part so if you mean by release a final product, sold as such, no, but a switch from Alpha to Beta status, yes. Beta status is a big step… but that may require another year to fine tune everyhing under Beta. Looking at what bring PU today with few type of missions, if you add transport, mining, bounty hunter, com, exploration… Beta is perfectly fine and you can spend many hours and days enjoying Beta. Especially because CIG will add more contents and locations for the years to come!

To me It is release the day they stop whipping out in game progress bewteen patch and let players keep what they earned in game.

This ATV was great like the past 5 but this information “newbies who stumble into it and can’t figure out what’s actually playable yet” is definitively a good news as new comers or people passing by do have trouble to find directions. Menus are there but making them more user/newbie firendly is the right move… especially with more contents added every quarter… until release of SQ42 Chapter 1.

and they’re developing that in a way that is easily updateable, that’s big deal if everything can be kept up to date automatically

If you haven’t watched the video, please spare the if/but/pessimist comments and memes. Try and go into it with some optimism, especially if you have nothing invested. Want to see great mechanic implementation? Into pioneering technology? Watch this ATV and give some genuine feedback on the videos content.

I remain optimistic about this game, I am not someone who think it’s vapor ware. My only concern is, well, to be frank, kind of sexist. It seems very much like a “boy’s” game to me, and I’m left wondering whether it will ultimately be a game I will enjoy or not.
But I am a graphics snob, and I do think it will at least please in that regard. I simply wonder if there is a life waiting for me in this universe. I think you folks know what I mean. Persistence can also mean the player’s desire to be there, in the game.

Gotta wonder why “Non-combat events” are mentioned in the same breath as things that make the game not sexist.

Gotta wonder why “Non-combat events” are mentioned in the same breath as things that make the game not sexist.

Because most females aren’t into slugging a 7.62mm full metal jacket projectile round through the Occipital lobe of an aggressors cranium just to enjoy watching the graphic of brains sliding down the wall behind said target. Counter-Strike, Overwatch, UP: Battlegrounds, Call of Duty, these are 90/10 percent male dominated games. Many of which have not only graphic violence but sexually suggestive content or the ability to post it. Where as most MMOs find a more predominate female presence that include more things to achieve than repeatedly slaughtering opponents. Unfortunately for the argument of your curiosity, Star Citizen is based off of this ‘pew-pew ‘ mentality and most women would not be attracted to that kind of violence and want more constructive things to do.

Reader
Melissa McDonald

Yes, girls use 9mm. (laughing)
Mostly it’s a thing where female avatars are an afterthought. I loved Wing Commander. But, I want more from this game.

Of coarse women use guns. The question was

Gotta wonder why “Non-combat events” are mentioned in the same breath as things that make the game not sexist.

And it got answered. Not sure what

Mostly it’s a thing where female avatars are an afterthought.

was suppose to imply.

Reader

Meaning it was like, what, 2 or 3 years of development before there was a female avatar? You can make of that what you wish, I will take it my way.

Godnaz

Uhm Mel, the male model isn’t even done yet. If watch any game footage, all the avatars are the same male because of this. The female was completed first.

Yeah, I get that impression as well. Waiting so long to put in a female avatar doesn’t help that impression. Nor does the fact that there’s so little to do yet other than blowing stuff up.

I think the opposite. I think its going to be a sandbox, and women are just as innovative when it comes to sandbox games.

Reader
ichi sakari

it is currently mostly (very mostly) male in-game and in-Org, but I think its not due to CIG pandering to boys club, and my guess (and hope) is that will change over time, not because StarKitty or w/e but because it finally delivers a universe of opportunities to play around in

I am really looking forward to being a miner. I don’t always like to be in combat and I also want to be involved in crafting. I am also a graphic snobz and love sci fi. I want to have that uncle owen experience in game but also have the option for exploration and discovery. The immersion of non combat and combat roles keep me in game. I guess a player base is what I am after lol.
