PvE dungeon crawling arrives in MOBA SMITE today with The Trials of King Hercules

SMITE is cementing its reputation as the MOBA most influenced by MMOs with the launch of The Trials of King Hercules today. “This new adventure plays like a classic dungeon experience from an MMO and offers SMITE players a whole new way to play the gods and goddesses of mythology with their friends,” says Hi-Rez.

“The Trials of King Hercules is a free 3 player PvE dungeon adventure available to all players of any level. The adventure begins in a town hub where players can accept quests before heading out. Completing quests will grant equipable items, and there are also buffs and equipment that can be purchased from the townsfolk with gold earned from defeating enemies inside the dungeon. Within the dungeon players will face bosses that test their ability to coordinate attacks and support each other as the fight progresses. Teamwork will be essential to victory, and players will be able to experiment with over 70 gods to create the most effective team composition. Once players have unlocked the more advanced hard mode they will be able to face the Lernaean Hydra in the final boss encounter for the ultimate loot and in-game rewards.”

The new “SMITE RPG” adventure arrives as part of a larger patch today, which also includes a visual update for Bacchus; new skins for Hercules, Poseidon, Ravana, Rama, and Da Ji; and a balancing pass on relics. Check out the trailer down below.

While it does sound interesting to me for sure, what I’m unsure about is if it would be enough to get me to get the game if I’m not interested in the MOBA part of it (which I’m not). Maybe I guess :D

So after playing around on this mode, I can definitely say that it’s pretty dang fun once you get into the flow of things.

You’re at a big disadvantage though if you don’t buy the 900 gem bundle, as the gold you amass through the Adventure lets you get guaranteed epic (tier 3) items. Otherwise you’re heavily at the mercy of RNG (even moreso than buying item rolls with gold), and it is very difficult to beat the final boss in Easy without having a decent arsenal of items. Also you have to pay heavy attention to the Progress section of the Adventure tab on Smite because that’s how you pick up quests and buy item rolls from the vendor.

Overall the Easy mode version is a pretty good length (10-20 minutes each for the two ‘levels’, depending on if you go for all the chests or not) and I love the mechanics that they put into the two boss fights as well as the ‘light room’. Feels very MMO-like and forces you to pay attention and learn the mechanics.

Will be interesting to see how Hard mode is, from what I understand it just adds another boss on but kind of hoping it adds a third ‘level’ leading up to the boss.

I really really really hope that HiRez considers expanding on this stuff in the future though. It’s so cool that they’re doing this stuff and it makes me sad that the likelihood of an MMO coming out of HiRez (after Global Agenda’s blunder) is very low.

I think it’s neat how HiRez has been using these Adventures to experiment and push the boundaries of their engine/systems.

It’s also a good way to survey interest for potential permament stuff or entire new game ideas.

Welp, I may redownload it and give it a go to see how this is. No interest in the normal gameplay mode but this seems interesting enough to check out.

I’m feeling the same way. I’ve always been interested in SMITE as a general game concept, but MOBA gameplay just does not call to me. This PvE adventure stuff? That may finally pull me in to have a look …

I tried Smite for a bit. It was…meh. Which is pretty much my opinion of mobas anyways.

Maybe they will make a mmo where all the leveling ‘content’ i.e. killing 200 green foozles, then 200 red foozles, can be done offline. You could still do it online and chat and rp with others but…

The real gameplay is when your leveled character can join in with others for dungeon runs.

Hmm this actually sounds pretty interesting. I prefer to stay away from MOBA’s because of their sometimes toxic communities but a PVE dungeon mode might get me to download and check it out.

“…introducing to you the same PvP/PvE class balance issues and their total dissonance, as you well know from your favorite MMO!”

Yay! /s

Kinda brings new meaning to the ‘holy’ trinity needed for dungeoning.

/e yells in chat, “TKH dungeon run needs tank. Prefer Geb over Ares. Have Aphrodite heals.”
