Final Fantasy XIV is hit by a DDoS attack causing network difficulties

Oh no.
Is there any better time for DDoS attacks than right after the launch of a new expansion? Apparently not; Final Fantasy XIV reports today that it has been getting hit with attacks for several days now, causing network difficulties that the engineers are working as hard as possible to counteract. The official announcement is that the attacks have hit on June 16th, June 18th, and June 20th, with the attacks considered to still be ongoing.

This may account for some of the game’s server issues over the past few days; countermeasures are still being worked on. The game has also had a minor patch to address other technical issues and bugs, so players should have a better Stormblood experience waiting once they log on if the DDoS attacks don’t make it unplayable. (And if they get through the queues, but that’s just to be expected.)

Mean people suck.

Sorry to hear FF is getting hammered with this attack. Does anyone know if there might be a motive? Blackmail for money, disgruntled players, anything of that sort?

Realllly small weiners.

And they probably are at a full three inches of attention while they’re doing this.

It’s actually most likely far more true than some may think – your answer probably really does have something to do with a lot of DDoS attackers motives. They’re mad at the world because of the importance placed on weiner size when they have especially small ones, and this makes them feel as if they have virtually bigger ones than they really do.

There’s often a reason behind them being a jerk and being anti-social trolls, and I’m sure this is the reason more often than many would think. It’s not meant to be a joke, I’m very serious.

Three is being generous. :p

Causing issues for people when something new and fancy comes out is usually enough of a motive for the trolls/script kiddies.

This. WoW and other MMOs always get DDOS attacks at the launch of significant expansions and updates.

It would be nice if people doing this were caught and punished in an extreme “let’s make an example” way. It’s sad that they normally always get away with it and just keep doing it. “It funnee cauz dey wanna plaey un we phudge it up so dey cant hur hur hur”. The brainless morons are just usually running someone else’s script while pretending to be hackers.

Yeah that would be wonderful, but thanks to internet anonymity (and the use of stuff like botnets) it’s hard to track that stuff.

Yeah I figured DDOS was a big cause of the random disconnects without even being in an instance. Gotta love the script kiddies who think they’re so trolly and pro hackers.

Posting here because I love that glowing red eyed pink Lalafell pic featured in the header…

…though my condolences for those who are unable to log in to their game at this moment. :(

I’ve been reading a lot of crap everywhere I look at this story.

I really only experienced the ddos that started shortly before emergency maintenance last night. It caused many people to dc, including me, multiple times. I have been playing since the start of EA and this was very clearly different. Sure, EA was rough with queues in the 1200 and 1800s for me. Sure, sometimes I’d dc when trying a MSQ. However, the game operated smoothly for the most part. That was up until last night.

I’m on NA-Leviathan, the most congested NORMAL NA server. Also, it seems to be affecting heavily populated servers more than others. My gf is on a low pop server and she has yet to suffer a dc.

Is this affecting all data centers or just the NA ones? Because EU hasn’t had any major issues since Friday.

I only experienced the one that started last night during launch. Early access has been reasonably smooth for me. Also, it seems to just be targeting the NA cluster.

My wife and I were doing the MSQ (the low level ones) and were in a dungeon and half way through suddenly everyone but me got disconnected, including my wife who was literally directly behind me. Its actually relieving to know my issues are being caused by some guy being a dick and not the game itself.

I wonder if these are created to take up admins time while hackers probe for security flaws/bugs on large new expansions.

That alert only applied to the North American server cluster, btw.

I doubt the DDoS has anything to do with the queues or broken npcs.

DDoS very much does affect queues. They make all data that tries to move to and from the game very slow and stopping at points, which means the queues don’t move at near the speed they are supposed to. So you spend a lot more time waiting trying to get in. DDoS has a lot to do with queues being bigger and slower than they should be…

The queue I am speaking of is login queue, nothing to do with instances. The DDoS has nothing to do with that.
