Wild West Online asks players what sort of gambling they want to see

This town is, in fact, big enough for the both of us. We need a fourth.

It’s just not right to think of the stereotypical wild west without including some gambling. Based on movies on the subject, cheating at poker and the penalties for cheating at poker make up the majority of most people’s pastimes. So Wild West Online knows players want some form of gambling in the game, and it’s going to be in there. The question posed to the audience is what sort of gambling you want.

Obviously, there are some options with a higher degree of historical accuracy, but the goal here is to pick games that are fun to play rather than necessarily adhering to the “right” sorts of games. It’s not a formal poll, so you can feel free to sound off on Twitter with the sort of card game you want to be playing. Although you can probably be confident that poker is going to be in there no matter what.

I notice that faro got mentioned in the article.I understand that it was one of the most popular card games in the Old West.; more popular even than poker.

While historically accurate, I’m not sure I’d recommend faro for this project though, as faro was reportedly not very fair in its rules, and also gave the player who was the dealer a level of influence over the play of the game which people would reject these days.

Apparently, Wyatt Earp (of Gunfight At The OK Corral fame) spent some time dealing faro, while he was also the town lawman (!) and managed to make himself a fair bit of money exploiting the fact that faro favored clever dealers to what we would now consider an unfair extent.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Earp is alleged to have gunned down a number of angry cowboys who challenged him for cheating them at cards — during a game now known for its biased rules.

So yeah, faro might be historically accurate, but I’m not sure modern gamers would tolerate it.

Then again, gamers who like to complain that all online games are unfair, and that developers are always finding ways to screw them over for the sheer glee of it, might find their one true love if faro is included in this game. :-D

Not sure how you’d make it skill, rather than stat- or gear-based, but horse racing (or even horse & buggy racing) would be a propos.

Poker, Faro, Roulette, Blackjack, all the classic 19th century casino games.
Whatever Doc Holliday would have played.
