Don’t look now, but StarCraft’s HD remake is going to zerg your base

Old-school.

Thanks to job postings this wasn’t a complete surprise, but yesterday Blizzard officially confirmed that it will be releasing a high definition remake of its original and incredibly popular StarCraft.

StarCraft Remastered isn’t just a new coat of paint slathered over an aging frame, so how dare you say that. The team has given a graphical facelift to the original game and its Brood War expansion, provided resolution options up to 4K, improved the sound quality, and included leaderboards, matchmaking, player profiles, and cloud saving. You can also flip between the original and remastered version of the game with a single click.

As StarCraft is still being used in competitive e-sports arenas, this move definitely helps to extend the lifespan of the game. StarCraft Remastered is slated to arrive on August 14th and will cost $15. Players who pre-order will get extras in both the original and sequel.

I wish Bethesda would do this for Morrowind.

Uh, Blizzard announced this quite awhile ago.

Back in late March to be exact. The website page and whatnot was already up and I remember looking it over. It’s just that now they’ve opened up the pre-orders which they’re of course broadcasting on the battle.net app and whatnot.

Also looks like they’re adding in some custom skins like they did with Starcraft 2, as you can get special base skins for pre-ordering.

I mean, that’s great, but doesn’t Blizz have enough cash to make an actual, new StarCraft game? I wonder how much they’ll charge for this re-skin…Seems lazy.

I don’t play Starcraft, but I play Diablo and the agitation for a remastered D2 is constant. If D2 were remastered, I would buy it. There’s definitely a market for remastered classics, and Starcraft certainly fits the bill. Many of the classic games are still loved and sought after on today’s platforms (hello, GoG).

This was announced 3 months ago. Not yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ypU9j4w3_w

Starcraft was never really my thing, but this is still very welcome news if only because Blizz might consider doing something similar with Diablo 2 if Starcraft Remastered is successful.

Activision (the other half of Activision Blizzard) is also doing something similar; they are releasing a remastered version of the first three Crash Bandicoot games, with new graphics and audio but the exact same level data and gameplay of the original version.

They also remastered COD4 and there’s rumors of MW2 being remastered as well.

i’m still curious if this will support all the old custom maps or not. i have me a hankering for some unit select mass attack zergling blood. but i couldn’t find a download for it either. :(

I believe the original Starcraft, complete with the Brood War expansion, is now free; the official download page seems to be https://battle.net/account/management/download/?show=classic (you might need a Battle.net account to download it).

Also, the intent seems to be supporting everything the old games supported.

I’m thinking about purchasing the remaster, but I need to be sure it will be playable offline; if it requires logging to Battle.net every time I play then I will keep to my offline-enabled non-remastered copy.

Edit: Oh, right. I believe the plan was to even support cross-version play, so you could play using the remastered version against someone with the non-remastered version, as long as it was at the latest patch.

I’d hope they would support custom map stuff, but who knows. They messed up spectacularly with Starcraft 2’s custom stuff until like… the HotS or LotV expansions. Even then, it’s still a pain in the butt to find all the different maps.
