WRUP: Items observed in this week’s recycling edition

A 1985 edition of a travel guide to Sweden. Seven broken glass bottles with the words “Sammy sux” written on them in permanent marker. A sealed box which was marked as “Don’s Crap.” Don, sleeping off a bender. Seventeen cans of Mountain Dew Green Label, which would be unremarkable except for the fact that none of them were opened. Half a bed. Half a phone book. All of a half-sized stepladder.

Four ant farms filled with glitter. A completed film manuscript entitled “Star Wars VII: The Force Blows Up Kylo Ren.” Far too many Tabula Rasa collector’s editions to count. Don again, sleeping off another bender. Don’s parole officer, looking for Don. This week’s installment of What Are You Playing. An entire cake with a fist indentation in it. Prom photos. Three bags of human hair. And, of course, raccoons.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): When not having flashbacks of bad VR trips at the LA Convention Center for Anime Expo this weekend, I’ll be doing a little Pokemon Go, and maybe ARMS, offline. I don’t take my Switch out with me much, but I’ve been having to escape the house to destress lately, making home console time rather short.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Heading home after real-life festivities this weekend, so I won’t have my PC for MMOs at the ready. But I’ve been testing out dozens of phone games, which is something! Finally picked up Crashlands!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): I can probably just take Final Fantasy XIV as a given for the next several months, yes? Also I’ll be dipping into DC Universe Online for Choose My Adventure.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): I’m up to my neck in Secret World Legends, so I’ll probably be getting in some good time trying to wrap up Kingsmouth. I should also be doing more Bingo Boffin quests in Lord of the Rings Online and figuring out The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind while I’m at it.

Your turn!

MEA MP grinding (bit by bit more comfortable with Gold, even if I’m always the worst one there). SWL! – done Kingsmouth save for grabbing all Legends, and at the Savage Coast hotel.

A weird week for gaming here.

I picked up both Batman: Arkham Knight and Elite: Dangerous on the cheap for my PS4, but I ended up liking neither of them — to the degree that both of them are already gone from my machine’s hard drive.

Elite: Dangerous plays better (or, at least, more easily) using console controls, in my opinion, but I just didn’t enjoy the gameplay any more than when i tried the game on PC.

Similarly, Arkham Knight is now free of its infamous launch bugs, but I just didn’t enjoy it.

Now, I’m not suggesting either game is bad, or shite, or whatever — all I’m saying is that I didn’t find any fun, for me personally, in either game.

It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a game that was a flat-out dud for me as a gamer, let alone two, but this pair just didn’t call to me.

Even though I got them cheap, I suspect I would’ve had more fun if I’d taken the money I’d spent on them, put it in a pile, lit in on fire, and watched the pretty flames. :-D

Again, not suggesting that the games are somehow irredeemably “bad” — only that they really hit me the wrong way.

Then again, Batman: Arkham Origins (now patched) was my favorite recent Batman Arkham game by far, and it still seems like everyone else hates that one, so maybe I’m not a good indicator of gaming tastes. :-)

In other news, my Fallout 4 addiction seems to be waning, but I can’t say much about why without getting into spoilers, which is something I won’t do.

Summary version? I aligned with one of the power factions (plots) in the game, in the hopes of doing a little good in a bleak gameworld, but the story played out surprisingly dark at points.

More bloodshed than even I bargained for, and innocents being killed by my character’s hand, which is never, ever something I like to experience in games.

As part of a multi-stage quest, I was literally told to “Kill everyone in room X” to progress the story, and three or four of the people in the room were what could be classed as noncombatant innocents.

Of course, they’re just unliving pixels at the end of the day, so I moved the quest forward, but I did not enjoy it; it wasn’t what I signed up for when I chose the long-running quest-line; and it basically took the shine off of a game I’d been enjoying immensely up until that point.

Hopefully, next week’s gaming will be more fun.

Take care of yourselves, please, folks. You’re unique in the history of existence, and we’d like to enjoy your acquaintance for as long as possible!

Cheers,

Sorry that Elite: Dangerous and Arkham Knight haven’t worked out for you. Personally had a lot of fun with both those game but different people like different things so yeah.

Out of interest which faction did you align with in Fallout 4? One is an outright evil faction and the remaining ones are all kind of grey and will do something bad for the sake of the greater good as they see it. Now whether you agree with their vision and how comfortable you are with them is of course a personal thing but they do tend to follow that pattern.

Okay, B3, because you’re the person asking, I’ll spill a bit more, but we’re gonna plant a big warning flag on this post, so I don’t accidentally wreck somebody’s game. Deal?

WARNING! POSSIBLE FALLOUT 4 SPOILERS AHEAD! TURN BACK NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!!!

stop reading …

no, really, stop reading now …

we’re not kidding … you know how B3 can get when he “Hulks out”, best to go read something else. I’m sure there’s a brand-new argument over Star Citizen forming somewhere on the website as we speak …

I chose to align with the Railroad, and the irony is, I’d probably do so again. They really do seem to be “the least of all evils” on the game’s socio-political landscape, at least to me.

I think the real problem here is in the game writing.

That “Kill everyone in room X” quest step did not have to play out that way.

Because you’re encouraged to play Fallout 4 immersively, I could think of a couple of ways to achieve the same objective (taking control of the room) without killing innocents — there are only about four civilians present, and they all go into “hide and cower” mode as soon as you declare your intention to seize the room.

Basically, they don’t need to be killed, but the way the mission goals are scripted, the story won’t advance unless everyone in the room is dead (at least it wouldn’t for me).

No way to have that nice little movie style “ethics moment” where you argue with Desdemona, and tell her, “No way. Not happening. I’m finding another way”.

In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch, in Predator: “Ah don’t do that kind of vork”” :-)

Even though they’re all only pixels, it broke my immersion in the story, and my identification with my character. My guy is now basically a cold-blooded murderer, which makes me less inclined to want to play him.

Even back in the earliest days of tabletop rpgs, Dungeon Masters were warned by the rules, “challenge your players, yes, but don’t take their characters away from them”.

I think Bethesda dropped the ball on this important concept here.

My opinions, anyway,

Cheers,

Still doing EVE, I find it relaxing. I stay in high sec, I bought some plex with cash and sold it in game for mucho dinero. Now I’m just running missions for fun, i don’t care about advancement.
I started SWL, combat is the biggest difference I don’t know why they didn’t just do a revamp or big patch.(?) Why a whole relaunch? Why destroy everything people had done before? Maybe I’m not there yet… Sypster and MJ will point out the differences, I’m sure. ;-)

Its a marketing thing so they can push it as a new game on steam to hopefully attract new players and new money.

This was done 100% completely to draw in a new crowd of players along with old vets. Unfortunately for me SWL is even more boring the TSW was. Combat feels just so simple and basic and it does not seem like you can do a real legit dungeons until max level… maybe I’m wrong there , but it all just feels very easy and boring to me.

LotRO, just moving around a mixture between Weathertop and Summer Festival, which is always funny to me when it’s like a frost every morning.

Unsubbed to WoW, so I am doing the normal thing I playing a lot in the last 5 days after ignoring the rest of the time I had it active.

I spent most of the week on vacation up in the Lakes Region of NH. Having just gotten back today, I spent the afternoon leveling my freshly minted Troll mage up to 60 in World of Warcraft. I also spent some of today grinding Tailoring, hoping to be able to make a flying carpet so he can cruise Outland in style. Either way I’m going to spend half the night awake listening to people shoot off fireworks. Have a Happy Fourth of July all!

Overwatch, Paladins, and a rogue-like card game called Monster Slayers that’s $6 on Steam and super addictive. “Oh, I’ll just do this one battle and then stop.” “Oh, a treasure. I should get that.” “Now I should try out that new card I just got.” ::cue an hour later:: “I’ll definitely stop after this battle.”

Started a new STO Caitian Engineer, partly so I could just play that sweet new Connie Refit model. Also…I somehow won a T6 Connie from the R&D Promo. Those go for 1.5 bil EC on the Exchange, but nothin’ doing’. This kitty’s going to have a Connie at max level. I like each character to have something unique.

The level of inflation for certain sought-after items in STO continues to boggle my mind.

Like you, I just want these things for the “fun factor”, but billions and billions of credits seems faintly ridiculous, and definitely not worth the effort to buy through the player market. Not for me, anyway.

Congratulations on your good fortune, by the way! Treat that ship right, and she’ll always bring you home. That’s what I’m told, anyway. :-)

Cheers,
