Secret World Legends update opens elite dungeons, beefs up patron benefits, and gives out free inventory
As promised by the dev team last week, Secret World Legends’ first post-launch patch is here and contains a lot of quality-of-life improvements for the game as a whole and the business model in particular.

Headlining features kick off with the debut of the elite dungeon system, which offers 10 levels of increasing difficulty for the first five dungeons in the game. Dungeons in general have improved, with a better chance of useful loot available in each boss chest and XP enabled for repeated runs.

Weapon and sprint unlocks have been lowered in cost, and Funcom is more than willing to make up the difference to anyone who has spent currency on them. One of the more onerous free-to-play restrictions involving trading between players has been removed entirely for players level 15 on up. All players also get an additional 10 slots in their inventory with today’s patch, which is welcome news for space-starved bees.

Funcom definitely sweetened the deal to become a patron, with such players now earning bonus AP and SP, 20% more Marks of Favor from challenges, and free teleports across playfields.

So buggy log in and the content I completed I have to do again thanks to some weird ass rollback bug…think Ill wait six months until funcom gets it’s act together.

Anyone else find themselves levelling too quickly? I’d been determined to tourist my way through the savage coast’s three zones, taking in everything and taking my time, but I’ve only gotten to Blue Mountain and already I’m several levels above the content there. Not a patron either, F2P account with just the TSW player benefits.

Yeah, I played most of the way through Savage Coast and was already level 28 as a non-patron. So it was obvious that if I was going to be any sort of completionist that I was going to be over level for most of the game.

Then Funcom had to go and give patrons double AP/SP, and that was enough to get me to sub and reroll to start my character over. I’d turn off the extra 10% XP if I could though. That’s often one main reason I don’t sub to games, XP bonuses usually make the game way too damn easy for the content you’re doing.

Yeah, unfortunately that happens under the new system. I’ve skipped most stuff and I’m still over leveled.

I had to read that title 3 times before I realized it didn’t say “Opens Elite Dangerous”

Can I have fun playing this and solving the mysteries without paying money or getting a sub?

Reader
Malcolm Swoboda

Yes.

Reader
Jeff

the sub just gives you extra keys for dungeons, loot boxes, free teleportation around, and some other pleasantries such as xp bonus. As for just playing the game all the missions are freely available. If you are taking your time and doing all the missions before going to the next area I don’t think not having the XP bonus will matter much but I may just not be far enough into it.

Totally.

Oh yes. As a F2P you are getting all content free, including the (really good) DLC packs that they made originally for the legacy game.

You might try this https://www.twitch.tv/videos/154009342

It is MJ’s headstart steam of SWL and she spends the first 30 minutes or so in the character creator. While she does only show the female side she does cover that quite thoroughly :-) Other than that you might try looking at some of the early SWL dev streams as I think they covered it in one of those but will let you find those yourself :-)

Reader

Am I going to be able to link my TSW account with my SWL account when it releases on steam? I want to ensure I have all the weapon unlocks.

Reader
McSleaz

Link it now, then use your log-in info in steam

Well I got more items in a single dungeon run than I got in all the chests combined since the early release.
So, yeah. It’s a bit better, and even when they’re not particularly good; since they all have their own passive ability instead of shuffled stat points, it makes loot far, far more interesting than it was.

Pretty happy with these changes, unsurprisingly. I don’t love the new dings, but I can live with them. I REALLY don’t love the server going down for maintenance before I use up my dungeon keys for the day and not coming back up until I’m supposed to be at work. Grrr….

Having a lot of fps issues with this game, dang I know my puter sucks but last night for a while I was getting 1.5 fps lol. I’m torn between waiting till I upgrade (and who knows how long that will be, game might be dead by then) or just chugging along but not putting any $’s into it. Strangely enough Elder Scrolls plays quite well (except for crowded areas).
Seems to be better optimized and yea I tried most of the suggestions as it seems as though this has been a thing with the older version as well.

can you give us your pc spec just to give us an idea of what you’re working with?

Intel core i5 2450 MCPU @ 2.50 GHz, 6 GB RAM, 64 bit windows 7
Direct X11, graphics card is weird has Intel internal which switches to NVidia
When you start up the game … GE Force Gt 520MX (ok you can stop laughing now, every time I get ready to buy a new laptop a window falls off my house, or all the appliances die.)

i’m thinking mobile parts could do it. mobile is a pain for proper high end gaming. and funcom games require the most high of hardware (and still don’t perform well on it).

anyways don’t hate on your laptop, funcom games are infamous for chewing on hardware no matter the level.

Reader

I’m enjoying it for the story etc. When I upgrade I’ll do a better run through, so many games have gone belly up in the last little while, I want to at least have taken a gander at it.

I sincerely hope it’s more enjoyable for for a playthrough with the new combat and such than it was for me

Some of it may be your rig, but a lot of it is just the game engine itself. I play newer and far more graphics intensive games, like Battlefield 1 or Black Desert Online, with better framerates and overall performance than I get in SWL. I still usually get about 60fps in SWL, but it’s obvious that there are optimization and other issues based on the fluctuations in performance.

The game has serious optimization issues, especially in areas with a lot of people.

But did you install it on an SSD? The difference is absolutely enormous, from awful, awful framerate and freezing 1+ second on HDD to just coughing a bit while loading the players in the auction house on SSD.
Never seen such a difference from a simple install.

Reader
Melissa McDonald

hope it doesn’t have caching issues on SSD, the downside.

Yes, it runs very, very hot. Always has for me. I can hear my poor GPU fan in the other room when running SWL or TSW.

Reader
Castagere Shaikura

ESO does the same thing too. And i think i know why. The more realistic the graphics are the harder the cpu has to work. Those are the only 2 games that has my cpu weezing like it can’t catch its breath and makes my pc case feel luke warm. Wildstar , LOTRO and Wow and just about every Asian mmo run smooth and no lag.

I’m happy with the changes. Thankfully I was barely out of Kingsmouth so I was fine with nuking myself and rerolling so I could enjoy the increased AP / SP right from the start. Hopefully the patron benefits will encourage more people to sign on.

That said, they need to get their act together so that patch days aren’t such a mess. If it’s like this now, it’ll be a nightmare when the Steam crowd arrives. Oh, and the new mission objective ding is godawful. I can’t mute the interface volume to get rid of it because that would remove important sounds like the “Spirit Blade is Ready to Kick Ass” indicator that I depend on.

And they really need to get rid of Joe’s Used Payment Processor and provide some decent options for us to give them money, but I get the feeling they’re just going to wait for Steam thinking everybody will use Steam Wallet.

Unfortunately, many people that want to give them money simply will not or cannot do so while HiPay is their payment processor.

I haven’t got to hear these horrible dings yet. I had just logged in when the server was being taken offline. But it sounds like a total “wtf?” change.

Reader
Hirku

It’s not just that the sound is bad (and it is bad), it’s also how it’s used. TSW / SWL has always had a nice clean sound for when you complete an objective/tier. Now you not only have this annoying sound on top of that, it happens every time you complete a step in a multi-step objective. Need to kill 10 zombies? You’re going to hear that ding 10 freakin’ times.

There are multiple annoyed threads on Reddit about this, so hopefully Funcom pulls their head out and does something about it quickly.

i’m almost tempted to go through the ropes to hear how bad this ding is. jesus. :D

Reader
Hirku

I’ll save you the trouble: Imagine that you’re playing the game, and you have to complete a quest that requires you to kill 4 of 4 types of monsters. Sitting beside you IRL is a little old lady with an organ. And each time you kill a single one of those 16 monsters, she hits a low note on her organ that’s almost as loud as the monster’s dying sound. Every. Single. Time.

I’ve been waiting all weekend to play the game, and I waited all day for the patch to play the game, and now I’ve stopped playing the game. It’s driving me up the damned wall. Funcom needs to remove this shit or give us the option to disable it.

hey now it’s a good song if you like 90s alt rock. but it was my way of saying i take your word for it.

i’ll go hide in the corner on this topic with boom and suffer our displeasure at funcom living up to their nickname again soz. XD

Reader

Hah, fair enough. Please leave some room in the corner since I have to wait for this to get fixed, which apparently is going to happen with the next patch. Supposedly Junior said this on Discord, which somebody quoted on Reddit. Another fine example of Funcom’s brilliant “passing-notes-in-class” communication strategy.

The communication is like a masochistic version of Chinese whispers.

While I would prefer forums if they must use all these other things please for the love of god be consistent where you post things. Some times information comes from website, sometimes twitter, sometimes reddit, sometimes Discord, sometimes from smoke signals (which while very SWL is not really useful for customer communications).

Funcom for the love of pick one and use that to share your information to the folks who are interested in keeping your game afloat. By all means cross post stuff but use one as a primary so we know where to look to find basic information out about your effing game.

It’s like they’re working out of someone’s garage and the only time you hear anything is when the person they send down to the corner store for beer and cigs has a chat up with clerk.

Then, if you happen to go to the store that day, and happen to chat with the clerk, maybe you’ll learn something. Maybe not.

Reader

I’d like to say there’s no way they’d just neglect non-Steam payment methods, since Steam presumably takes a cut of the cash… but man, this is Funcom. Their management are just as likely working out a plan to process payments through the alien supercomputer that speaks to them through the fillings in their teeth while they’re huffing lead paint fumes and laughing about how other studios get so uptight about little details like “profits” and “financial sustainability”.
