Riot Games files a lawsuit against the developer of an alleged League of Legends clone

Live by the ripoff, die by the ripoff.
Once upon a time, a studio named Riot Games made a game called League of Legends, which was essentially a Warcraft III map given some slight adjustments and a new coat of paint to avoid copyright infringement. Now, that studio is very successful because LoL made roughly all of the money ever printed, and it’s suing another developer on the basis of that studio skipping the “slight adjustments and new coat of paint” phase of the plan.

You can check out a trailer for Mobile Legends below, and… well, that does look similar, but it’s really up to the courts whether it’s similar enough to shut down the operation. It’s developed by Shanghai Moontown Technology and has already been removed and re-submitted from Google Play under a slightly different name. Time will tell if the lawsuit moves forward or not.

Shanghai Moontown? Riot is SOL, that sounds like China, and China won’t give your complaint the time of day they spend on the toilet.

Maybe you are being glib but
“which was essentially a Warcraft III map given some slight adjustments and a new coat of paint to avoid copyright infringement”

isn’t exactly the history of the game.

I thought they confused League of Legends with DOTA, I never played either game how ever back during Wrath of the Lich King members of my guild then were trying to get me to play DOTA on off Raid days claiming “DOTA is basically a tweaked version of a WC3 player made Mod that Blizzard has grudgingly left alone but you might put your WoW account at risk by playing this elicit Mod”.

I mean, League of Legends started off as practically a DotA clone with watered down elements.

I was thinking to the point that you had an original creator of the MOBA – Feak.

Well, League of Legends had Guinsoo who was the creator of the DotA Allstars map which was a Frozen Throne spinoff of Eul’s Defense of the Ancients map for Reign of Chaos. It essentially was a rip of the map and added new things to it. Guinsoo worked on it for like a year and from everything I’ve heard it sounds like the additions and changes he made broke the game’s balance more than anything. IceFrog then came in (originally alongside Neichus who later ‘bailed’ (his own words) on it) and the rest is basically history. IceFrog is largely attributed as the one who actually was able to make DotA into a balanced competitive game which was the big reason it soared in popularity (I was playing Warcraft 3 custom maps heavily around that time and DotA was like half of the custom maps being hosted regularly).

So Guinsoo was definitely one of the key people in the game’s history, but Eul was the original creator and IceFrog is the one who actually committed to DotA and made it into the competitive game that continues on to this day (he’s been working on DotA for around 12 years now).
