Dark and Light’s promised “wyvern-sized” announcement has come to pass, and it’s a doozy for fans who have been anticipating this sandbox reboot. Snail Games is launching the game tomorrow, July 20th, on Steam early access.

“It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally almost at the starting line,” the studio said. “Get ready to tame a horde of wild beasts, craft dozens of powerful magical spells, build an impenetrable fortress, and compete for domination of the planet Archos!”

Get pumped for the release with the early access trailer below!

For what it’s worth, I’ve been playing this for a few hours and if you can get yourself past the overdone sandbox survival genre, it can actually be a refreshing take on fantasy rpg games imho.

I would suggest they have taken a branch of the ark engine and then developed from there. It is definitely the same engine… If you enter the console and bring up admin manager for example, the commands still reference Dino’s ?

But I’m really enjoying the fantasy elements. No it’s not an mmo for sure, with servers up to about 100 and I’m currently hosting my own with friends. But I’ve always said if you took ark and made it a fantasy setting I’d be there… So I am lol.

Nope, will never touch these co-op brawlers even if they are free, this is what is killing mmorpgs, player fragmentation without any sociality and massivity.

FFA open worlds are the genre that will save mmorpgs.

Oh, this isn’t a MMO… What a tragic twist for my interest in this game.

Thanks MOP commenters for clarifying that this isn’t an MMORPG (as I thought) but a reskinned ARK, so just a small-scale multiplayer survival game. Might still be great for people who like this genre, but not for me. Saves me some time and a 50gig download.

They have separate PvE servers. I’m actually slightly interested now. I’m wondering how MMORPGish this will be though. Some of these games lean more towards small groups of online multiplayer rather than massively. I haven’t looked enough to really know. Though the 50 gig download has me wondering if I want to give up that much more space right now with all the other stuff I’ve got installed.

Their Steam FAQ states they’re aiming for 100 players on official servers.

Not really interested in this online but if the wife and or kid are interested, local co op might be fun.

Seems like there is still a fairly large group of gamers out there who havent yet been smacked in the face by the asian mmo market.

This is NOT an Asian MMO. Why do people still keep calling it that? This is basically Ark 2.0, with magic instead of guns and dragons instead of dinosaurs. The same engine, the same building mechanics, and some of the same world assets (see rocks, water, trees, etc). It is a survival sandbox game with tiny servers; not an MMO in the least.

Asian company is in charge of its monetization, which is where asian games typically end up slapping its players silly.

And “mmo” these days pretty much means any online game with a handful of players at the same time, especially if there are multiple servers with multiple players.

Dont confuse “mmo” with “mmorpg”

LOTS of NA game companies **** the sht outta their player-base’s Wallet, just look at Electronic Arts. Nice Cherry Picking though.

Right, lots, but not most to all. Plenty of NA companies dont do this. On top of that, most NA gamers are aware (being the key concept of my original post) of how badly companies like EA try to leech their money.

Find some big name asian companies that DONT. Its a lot harder than finding NA companies that dont.

this is re-made(they bought this dead game off) by snail games the company who ruined the mmo age of wushu and ended up convincing people to buy 25K+ in usd of virtual junk

But this is the game that recreated itself, and in the process downscaled from MMO to multiplayer? Is that correct? Since I am only interested in fullscale MMOs.

Snail games guys. Age of Wushu and Black gold online. You think BDO’s cash shop is bad.

It’s not really a true MMO in the sense that you can host your own server. How is a cash shop going to hamper me in any way if I run the server?
