Aion aims to overhaul its starting zones next month

Thinking about a fresh start in Aion? You might want to hold off a few weeks until Update 5.6 drops on August 9th, as the EU team is overhauling its beginner experience to make it look and function better.

“Start a fresh adventure in Atreia soon and look forward to visible improvements as well as more detail in the regions of Poeta and Ishalgen,” the team said. “Additionally, your brand-new character will head out on their adventure with equipment that is also much more detailed.”

Get a look at the “before” and “after” differences of the starting zones and gear after the break!

The zone updates went live in NA July 19. They look great– from the new starter armors to the more lush and polished zones. They really streamlined quests, too.

It’s funny that they overhauled these zones in such a way that they really minimized your time there, because it seems like a lot of effort for just a few minutes of gameplay. I hope they’ll continue to graphically update the old zones.

Not entirely crazy about some of the changes to the Asmodian starter area, though I do like that overall the flora looks stranger and more bio-luminescent like you might expect from the half of the world that never sees the sun.
I kinda preferred the Autumn look to the Elyos starting zone over making things greener overall. But that doesn’t matter much to me; you’d never catch me playing one of those sun-cursed bastards anyway. >.>

I like to see this. Graphical updates in starter zones often get overlooked, when it’s so important to the game. Good for Aion. I don’t play Aion, but Aion fans sure do love their game. Some of the most passionate fans I’ve met.

All but one of those old newbie armor sets had the hands clipping through the dress/skirt/chain. Like, can you at least design your armor/characters so they don’t clip through the simplest of clothes while standing idle?

The new armor mostly avoids it, but this game has been out quite a while. I guess it can be hard to design for when the average female character model is a stick figure.

That’s nice and all, but eventually you get to the second zone and experience a drop in quality, then what?

I’ve just realised looking at the second video that the female character model has been designed with built-in high heels. And with all that running around to do.

I love it when MMOs upgrade their old content.
Not sure I like that too much though, the artstyle itself is widely different… like why are the asmodian camps made out of wood instead of stone now?

Won’t come back though, the video is enough to remind me how the world may as well not exist, it’s just a giant corridor.
