Lord of the Rings Online will deploy Mordor on Wednesday

Swanky.
Standing Stone Games now says it will launch Mordor on Wednesday after a delay of just two days.

“We have some good news on Mordor; all’s good and we’re ready to go on Wednesday,” says the studio. “The LOTRO game worlds will be unavailable from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM Eastern (-4 GMT) on Wednesday, August 2nd, to release Update 21: Mordor. Release Notes will be posted on Tuesday. Thank you for your patience, and we’ll see you soon.”

The expansion was meant to launch today but was delayed at almost the last-minute as a result of the discovery of a nasty bug. As we wrote this morning, the original launch plan and preorder packages gave Standing Stone Games the option to delay for up to a month, though apparently that won’t be necessary.

I’m so curious to see how they conclude the events from the books and how they transition the main story line into the post-book era. If the epic story of the last update is any indication this will be a treat for anyone how enjoys good quest-based story telling in MMOs.

Personally, I would’ve preferred a release in autumn, but if SSG wants me to sit inside, in a darkened room during August, so be it :-)

So I’ve been away for a while. What do free to play players get from this expansion?

WIll the new character models be released with this update or…?

Yes, but just the men and elves for now, I believe. Dwarves and hobbits are getting their avatar updates in a post-expansion patch, possibly coinciding with the new raid.

Excellent! Can’t wait to see a better looking Man avatar :D

That’s good, a few day delay isn’t bad at all. Oh well, a few more days to catch up on other stuff before giving the updated character models a spin!

There will still be other bugs at release but they have been noted and will be addressed asap

Well, I’ll be starting fresh (never got very far any time I’ve tried the game) so any bugs with the new expansion won’t bug me : P

Soon as the new expansion goes live I stop playing my capped Champion and go back to focusing on my Hunter and Loremaster for the next few weeks. ;)

Any suggestions for a new player healer? I’m kinda leaning towards buying Rune Keeper because I’ve never been terribly in love with the musical aesthetic of bards and the Minstrel in LOTRO. Just wondering how they are for leveling up and casual group play and the like, nothing high-end or anything.

Any tips from LOTRO vets would be helpful, though I do plan to dig through the reddit a bit to see what I can find there as well : )

Runekeepers rock as healers or dps. :) You can’t go wrong. Everyone who plays them enjoys them. It’s the one class that always tempts me to spend more time with. Mine is 40th but I’ve been playing him since returning.

I tend to get easily side tracked and LotRO is definitely one of those mmorpgs that if you like alt’s you’ll end up getting no where! I’d check out Reddit and the Lotro Wiki as well. Oh and incase you need a refresher of zones/levels…

I’m still playing mechanics catch up since returning, so I’m rusty on a lot of mechanics or the changes that have come down the pike.

Heh, not a huge alt-person but I do dabble a bit. Will likely centralize my efforts onto a single character, at least to start with, and see how things go from there. Will likely have a tank/dps alt in case I end up disliking healing in the game, that’s my general MO when it comes to trinity based games. Healer/dps first, tank/dps second and pure dps a long, distant third : P

Yeah I honestly recommend to anyone that they focus on one character. It just seriously slows you down to play multiple. I do have one of every class but the Beorning. It’s on my long list of things to do still.

I’m always having to fight the temptation to start playing my Warden who has been 51st for a very long time. The class is awesome but has a serious difficulty curve to master and requires a lot of memorization of gambit combos.

My champ is supposed to be my gathering alt but he end up being my main for many years though he’s a bit of undesired character since most don’t like Champion tanks. :/ He’s great for soloing most things though.

Now you got me thinking about my darn runekeeper though… oh so many distractions and so little time. Also I do all the crafting and try to make out the craft guild stuff. lol. Yeah it’s a nightmare.

Rune Keeper has a lot of good going for it. You can be a very solid healer. You also have more enjoyable leveling (IMHO) than Minstrel because the DPS is a lot higher. Most of your leveling is frankly going to be solo because you’re unlikely to find a lot of groups running the same content you are. During that time, your healing will keep you alive while you quest. There are also times when you have to keep NPC’s alive, in which case you just heal away to your heart’s content. Then when you do group, such as for a skirmish or dungeon, you can change specs to full healer and be very capable at that. Best of both worlds.

Sure.. Like how they fixed the rubberbanding with mounted combat or the constant server crashes in Gondor shortly after release. Their tower of bugged out code stands taller than Mount Doom…

The rubberbanding is the limitations of the game engine. I don’t see that changing ever. I do wish they’d fix Minas Tirith Saturday alone it client crashed at least six time while I was there. :/

You are welcome. The delay was due to the MOB’s not moving/patrolling and needed to be fixed.
