The odd thing about this game, vs other mmorpgs: Normally when a game like WoW, or LOTRO, or older EQ games would release news of an expansion, it would inspire me to jump back into the game BEFORE the expansion came out. The hype and excitement alone… just knowing it was coming to the game, often would give me incentive to want to play the game again even before the expansion was released. It would be like a mental refresher of all the reasons I enjoyed playing in the first place, with the promise of more to come.

However, with GW2, im not at all inspired to jump back into the game right now. Despite me falling for the expansion hype. In fact that thought of doing that makes me think, “Ugh, what am I gonna do? that would just be very boring”. With GW2, nothing currently in the game seems fun for me at the current time… And yet, the expansion looks like a lot of fun, new content, especially aimed at my play style (exploration and story). Im not sure if this is a failure of the games design or what, all I know is that it feels “off”.

Sounds like the HOT burnout hit you too. This game used to be so much fun when it came out. But they killed it with lame gimmicks that all new mmo’s seem to do to get people playing. I hope people can skip the HOT content and just start with this stuff. Knowing them you might have to do Hot stuff first.

I wish they would focus a bit more on improving the quality of life things in the game too. For example: Tracking buffs and debuffs is still a chore and often impossible in combat. It would be nice to have a system that is more configurable, or at least allow for mods. I want to be able to put my buff/debuff bars where i want them. I want to be able to filter exactly which things I see on an enemy.

Im also tired of how many of the metas for classes, are just not as fun to play as the non-meta. But good luck playing group content with non-meta builds and not having people yell and scream. This has totally removed my desire to ever play Engineer again.

30 bucks with a lvl 80 boost shocked me. Maybe they are learning.

Finally getting a rifle for Thief and ability to do long range combat. I hope his includes improvements for dual pistols too.

The story is just so meh to me though. Just a bunch of desert and a fire God that seems so stereotypical villain.

I saw plenty of non-desert environments going on… I’m absolutely sure that it won’t be five giant desert maps! I honestly can’t say how Balthazar will shape up though… I guess time will tell. I’m far more interested in the damage control / dragon protection kernel than the whole facing off against Balthazar thing.

I sure hope so. Because if it’s 5 slightly different varieties of desert, then that’s going to be a pretty quick way to make sure I never bother to log in. I hate desert zones with a passion. I’ll tolerate them, but if that’s all that’s on offer then I’ll nope right the hell out : (

One day guardians will get an interesting specialization that fits with the class thematically and helps it fill the tanky/supporty frontline role that many folks rolled guardians to play. One day… (Wooden Potatoes had a great bit about it in his specializations video from his HoT review series)

Until then, we’ll just repeatedly get specializations that will fill gaps within the class, but in no way fit with it thematically. Hooray, thanks Anet. At this point I’m legit considering just moving over to my ranger or finishing leveling my ele, though the thought of needing to play through all of HoT on a second character sure throws cold water on that idea : /

Will need to do deep dives into all the text when the writeups are done, but while Anet made some moves I like ($30 base price instead of the stupid $50, super close launch date etc.), there’s plenty that’s causing me to seriously consider holding off on this expansion as well. Still salty about HoT -_-

The though of having to play ANY of HoT is enough to keep me out of the game haha. I hated those zones and forced group play so much it actually killed the rest of the game for me.

I really hope that the new expansion doesnt require new characters or alts that havent played through much of HoT, to have to do so (for the mastery advancement) before progressing through masteries in this new expansion.

I still havent completed all my masteries on my main character, nor do I even care to because that content is just not fun for me.

I don’t mind masteries – but mother of god did I hate level design in HoT. It was the most frustrating place to try and navigate. Gorgeous to look at, but I hated trying to get any where. And the fact that you couldn’t even really walk places by yourself because each combat encounter was geared towards having more than one player present or you got stomped just wasn’t fun. Being unable to do most of the content by myself, at my own pace just … bleh.

I know! I love jumping puzzles and all but I don’t want the entire zone to be one. Gawd I hate the HoT zones!

For me the level design was just wasted. Take Verdant Brink. Great stuff there with the verticality, but you don’t go to half of it at all except for an odd achievement token here and there.

Same here! Its the main reason I can’t bring myself to give this game another go dewpite atill having a shed load of gems sitting in my account! SO done with the game… but I hear tell of a way to skip HoT? Do my eyes deceive me??

Chronomancer became the tanky/support frontline role.

And now Warriors become the anti-caster role Mesmers were.

Overall, what features we’ve seen feel far more fitting than I had initially anticipated from the early spoilers. The mounts aren’t the sort of bread-and-butter travel vehicle I was half expecting and the elite specs seem to be much more thematically relevant than the first batch. I’m delighted to get my hands on this so soon… the dedication to regular content drops is not letting up and the trust that this adherence to a promise is building is definitely felt in the community. Honestly, this looks so beautifully and thoughtfully put together, but I need to get hands-on to really know how well this all fits so I can’t wait for next weekend. The story opening is just as expected: One renegade god turning against the world is a nice story hook for a new beginning, I say.

Um am going to let all that sink in for a bit. Bits seems exciting but other not so much atm. Yeah going to rewatch it and think on this a little.

Agreed! While I find it a lot “more” than HOT, I’m not sure if it’s enough to drag me back in. I will definitely be patching up (can’t wait to se how long that’ll take :D) and trying oput the free weekend though – just to see!

It does make me wonder if I should reinvest my efforts back into this game. I would have to find my password I lost for it some years ago just to get it up and running again. But I’ll cross that bridge when my pigtails decide to come to it.
