Indie sandbox MMO Tree of Life officially launches on August 17, won’t include PvE-only servers

Here comes another MMO emerging from early access! We’re talking about Korean sandbox import Tree of Life, which hit beta last year following a transition to factional PvP and a big graphics overhaul. Developers NeoBricks and OddoneGames, who’ve said they sold 34K copies of the game during its first few months in the wild, are plotting a final beta from August 10th to 16th, at which point the servers will be partially wiped and launched on the 17th.

The announcement comports with last month’s note that the test phase would come to an end in “early August 2017” when the game is fully released on Steam. The plan is to implement the new Clay 2 engine, redesigned UI, and PvP update for launch. A more recent FAQ tells players that the relic war will be removed from the final version, the UI will see a new compass, and the team might consider world bosses. As for PvE servers,

“The idea of PvE/PvP servers is interesting but we do not consider it. In the world of ToL, the 3 factions are contesting but PvP should not be the essential feature. We are designing the game so that you can enjoy it even without active PvP (We have looked at the Community Feedback and have been discussing about PvP and concluded to remove the Relic war in the official version).”

In 2016, we included Tree of Life on our guide to the best upcoming indie MMORPGs and our MMOs to watch in 2017 list. Check out the official launch trailer down below!

One of the few eastern sandbox mmorpgs i bought on steam in EA, great ideas but the development was so slow that i give up. Is about the damn time they release it and do not denaturating the game into pve and pvp ghettizing the whole community.

Finally i can back to play.

Most linear sandbox I’ve ever played.

Still waiting for the magic system the game is essentially advertised as having already, but does not. Looks like not even a mention of it for “launch” either. I also like how the steam page is still heavily advertising the Relic War system, which is also being completely removed at launch (to be “reworked” but time will tell if they ever actually add it back in. )

This is not a themepark where they just add new maps, new monsters, new quest, is an open world ffa sandbox, if you leave out pvp then there is nothing left to do once you build you town and collect resources. You will leave the game anyway for lacks of content since in a sandbox mmorpg there aren’t quest and levels, you create the content among other players.

I repeat everytime this concept but some people have no clue and they fail to understand that an ffa sandbox with a 100% player driven economy can’t work without player attrition and guild wars for resources.

I know how the Korean/Chinese stuff like Black Desert works, I just don’t want to be part of it.

You could certainly do a sandbox with 100% player driven economy, no guild wars, and no PvP – you just need other money sinks. I also know it probably wouldn’t do well in Asia – the audience is used to FFA and likes P2W, and the devs know how to make P2W work in this scenario so that’s what they do. I’m just disappointed to see something that looks nice up front end up being the same old ‘p2w players prey on f2p players’.

another translation: “PvE means we have to create content for the players, and that is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive.”

also the whole idea of our pvp sandbox games is to attract as many “sheeps” as possible to feed the gangers, because the key to a successful pvp game is to create the illusion among gankers that they are respectable fighters while protecting them from respectable fights…

What all those fail to understand is that we are not in 2004 anymore and there are no “sheeps” anymore… Someone have to tell them… or we will continue t ohave dozens upon dozens of Darkfail MMOs

It’s always interesting how developers of PvP games imagine an idyllic world where everyone cooperates and ignores the core design element: PvP.

That naivety was kinda acceptable back in the days of Meridian59 and Ultima Online because there was no body of knowledge about how players of mainstream games would react.

(Only kinda acceptable, though, because there were extensive evidence, and even academic studies, showing how players of smaller niche games behaved when given similar freedom to harm their fellow players.)

Nowadays, though, expecting players to behave themselves in an open PvP game is naivety bordering on idiocy.

Do they have a cash shop that lets you get an advantage like that?

Nice to see a full release. I just wish I could have as much fun as they do in that trailer. I think you need friends to make that happen.
