Gamescom 2017: Overwatch’s Mei-centric Rise and Shine animated short

15

Blizzard brought the goods to Gamescom this year, with trailers and announcements for almost every game in its stable, including — and perhaps especially — Overwatch. The team just revealed the game’s latest animated short, Rise and Shine, for viewers, and Mei fans will join me in cheering as this one’s all about her. Unfortunately for Mei, her story’s a sad one, but worth a watch even if you don’t play.

“In Rise and Shine, Mei wakes up years after being cryogenically frozen to find that Overwatch has been disbanded, the world is very different than the one she knows, and that she is the last surviving scientist at Ecopoint: Antarctica.”

I predict Overwatch 3d porn makers will focus on Mei for a while now

Not a fan of shooters, generally, I would welcome an Overwatch animated series much in the storytelling style of this video short. Blizzard should negotiate a deal with Netflix. Magic like this should be shared.

Typical excellent quality of animation & voice acting. Now if only Blizzard would dare to release a proper MMORPG in the same “universe”… Won’t likely to happen any time soon (or ever), but hey, one can still dream.

I’ve never even played Overwatch, but am still a huge fan of the game’s animated shorts :)

I think every Blizzard Gamescom article at this point i’ve read online has included some version of ‘its worth looking even if you arent playing anymore’ which kind of says something about the perception of the games right now.
Still the Overwatch animations never disappoint.

and, y’know. Mei is Bae and all that.

This is really really good and at this point I am wondering why Blizzard are wasting their time with games, GO BE THE NEXT PIXAR ;-)

Easier said than done. Pixar is the best. That’s like saying, “Go be the next Microsoft/Apple/Google!”

It is hard, so it is worth doing, Blizzard animation team is so good, so many people asking them to make feature films, Blizzard did say they want to make more books, movies, comics … etc, so why not animation movie?

Nothing worth doing is ever easy but I think they have it in them to do an Overwatch animated movie or series :-)

For me it’s not even that. Blizzards makes these really well made videos; yet, the game is just a MP arena shooter. No character development, no story development in the game itself. Just running around doing objectives time and time again.

It really is a waste on that shallow game.

But in terms of profit on the other hand…
Blizzard is now always looking for the cheapest investment – return ratio, since the Titan cancelation:
TCG, MOBA, and now a Teamshooter! ;P

Didn’t they announce an activision-blizzard movie studio last year that got laughed at by everyone for its grand reveal of “plans for a call of duty cinematic universe”?
