Dungeons and Dragons Online confirms that Ravenloft expansion is still on for this year

It has been a good long time since we have heard anything about Dungeons and Dragons Online’s promised Ravenloft expansion. While we still don’t know when this horror-themed module is coming to the MMO, at least we have official confirmation that it is still happening for 2017.

On the official forums, CM Jerry Snook addressed the apparent shift from “fall” to “winter” in the studio’s plans for the expansion’s launch. Previously, the team was stating fall 2017 as a target window, but on a recent livestream, the language pointed to winter.

“It’s always been the plan to start with [Lord of the Rings Online’s] Mordor, then do Ravenloft, and that’s exactly what’s happening,” Snook said. “Ravenloft will be released when it is ready, and we’ll have more info on the exact timing of it as we get closer to release. The plan is to release it by the end of the year. I don’t want to start getting into semantic debates over what ‘closer to’ means, but sure, there is a time frame we’d enjoy releasing Ravenloft during, and we’re working toward that goal. But as soon as we give time frames and dates, people will chisel it in stone, when the reality is more flexible than that.”

In an interview this past January on Massively OP, Standing Stone Games indicated that Ravenloft may add one or more playable races to the game.

While this would be an awesome drop for Hallowe’en, I’d be happier if they take the time to release it “when it’s ready”.

They should do a two for one offer with Lotro for the monthly optional subscription .

Like SOE/DBG’s All Access program. I totally agree.

They could just make a game in the Ravenloft setting and I’d be happy. I assume when they say Ravenloft they just mean Barovia. Would be great if they covered other realms and we go to see baddies like Lord Soth, Vecna and Mordenheim/Adam. Lots of great lore and classic villains.

I’d love to see Keening – a city populated solely by undead, going about their “lives” the same way they did when they were human. There’s a huge body of lore in Ravenloft, much of it copied from the classic horror stories (Strahd being the canonical example, borrowing heavily from both the historical and fictional Dracula).

Lot of source material to draw on. I had many of the books when I was younger.

Sounds to me that the game is just sniping classic modules. I doubt it would detail much of anything past the original module. It did have Lord Soth in it anyway but my history of gaming with Soth was in Dragonlance which is a setting I’d much rather see than any other D&D setting.

Dragonlance is basically a high fantasy Middle Earth clone and with the hype around Dragons and GoT it would be a well received setting.

So basically the 10 day window right at the end of the year; that’s a pretty small corner to paint your self into.

I agree. Clearly SSG doesn’t have the resources or manpower to juggle both IP’s so they should just drop the D&D licence so someone else can pick it up because clearly LotRO is their golden cash cow and DDO has been suffering piss poor development due to it.

Is Neverwinter not someone else using the D&D license? I don’t think SSG has exclusive rights.

I was just implying that they should have given them selves more wiggleroom, say that it’s due out First Quarter of 2018 only to surprise every one with a 12/17 release as opposed to that 10 day window they gave them selves.
