Underage Overwatch player lands six-figure e-sports contract

Gothier than thou.

He may not be old enough to vote, but 17-year-old Jay Won is already making more money than you. Probably.

Won, an Overwatch player who goes by the handle “sinatraa,” just landed an $150,000-per-year contract with NRG Esports. He will be playing for the e-sports firm on its Overwatch League team, enjoying revenue-sharing options and team bonuses above and beyond his annual salary. Which, again, is $150,000.

Apparently Won is such a good player and in such great demand that there was a bidding war between teams to grab him. He’s also part of the North American Overwatch World Cup team, which will be competing in early November at BlizzCon.

This is merely the latest drop of wild news to fall into the bucket of Overwatch League craziness. The fledgling league is expanding aggressively as it seeks to establish itself and the game as a legitimate e-sports outlet. Last month, the OWL expanded to include teams from London and L.A.

Meanwhile, some school teachers in the US make ~25k / year

School teachers are paid from peoples taxes. Do you want to pay all the teachers 150k a year by getting much more of your own money taken away to pay them? Even if you don’t have kids? If you want to give up half of your salary so that the teachers can be paid more, be my guest. They know what they’re getting into before they get the jobs.

This guy is working for a private enterprise and is being paid directly based on how much money he’ll make them in return. It’s such a big difference.

All that matters is that some kid is making 6 x as much as a school teacher to just play video games.

It’s not up to me to balance governmental budgets, but it seems clear that teachers have a much more important place in society than some kid playing video games.

It’s wrong and a fitting analogy for a lot of what’s wrong with the US.

Actually the average salary of a school teacher is about 60,000 a year. Not bad for someone who gets 3 months straight vacation each year.

And it’s far from “all that matters” – there is a reason why each salary is what it is. The kid isn’t paid from our taxes. He’s bringing in more money than he’s being paid and is being paid by a private enterprise. He gets what he earns. He’s the one earning money based on Capitalism. The teachers are the ones on a federal or state program with set wages. It doesn’t matter if he’s making a million dollars a month as it’s based on what he is bringing to the people he works for.

For a state / federal based job being paid out of our taxes with a massively long vacation, I’d say $60,000 is more than fair for that. Though the amount of students, the area being taught in, various things affect the salary – the bottom 10% earners for teachers still make about 40,000 – pretty far from 25k. I don’t know what century you’re pulling your figures out of.

Comparing a performance based earnings job from a private enterprise to a tax based Government or State program can’t fairly be done. They’re not comparable. That doesn’t show anything wrong with the system. It’s not as if he’s being paid out of our taxes, it’s not as if the teachers are all making the school hundreds of thousands of dollars each and then not getting paid based on what they’re bringing in, it’s just so not comparable…

If 17-year-old is old enough to compete in traditional sports as a paid professional, she or he is old enough to do that in e-sports.

Save your money! Sports careers are short. There’s a 15 year old gunning for you right now, after reading this article, he’s going to forge his body in the fire of his will.

I really don’t understand this. Then again, I really don’t understand the ridiculous transfer sums and salaries of football players either. I guess it’s no different from real sports in the end. If anything, esports is not as bad (yet).

Go watch Ken Burn’s ‘Baseball’ documentary.

Will provide some insight.

Wait till people start throwing matches to fix gambling on Overwatch.

Funny, I was watching a US vs. Germany match yesterday that I think had this Sinatraa in it. He was an amazing Tracer to watch.

This is exactly the kind of news Blizzard needs to put e-sports over the top.

Personally if I was going to pick a member of the rat pack it would have been Dean Martin.

Ole Deano in his cups all the time.

I’d go for Sinatra. Sure he might have you beaten to death if you spill a drink on his best girl but he’d be your boon companion the rest of the time.
