Magic The Gathering Arena’s card releases will sync with physical card releases

Remember a few weeks ago when Wizards of the Coast announced Magic The Gathering Arena, an online card game headed up by former Turbine prez Jeffrey Steefel? We’ve got a little bit more info today, as PCGamesN reports the studio aims to release cards inside the game in sync with their physical release in the real world.

“Our goal is to definitely have card sets released day and date. [… ] So when you see a release in the physical world you should be able to see it in MTG Arena. You’ve seen a little bit of our experimentation with this with Magic Online so far where [card releases] sometimes even earlier than day and date release.”

The plan won’t surprise MMORPG players, as we’ve been watching PWE’s Neverwinter sync up with WOTC’s real-world D&D releases for several years now. In fact, that might just be one of the properties that helped WOTC get over its apparent past fears about leaks, as chronicled by PCGN.

And what about Cryptic’s Magic The Gathering MMO announced back in June? No news yet.

I’m quietly hoping this game is successful. I’m also quietly hoping there is a two-headed-giant mode at launch.

i wonder if they’re going to repeat the same mistakes they made with SOE’s MTG online game. XD

at least unlike nw this looks like an actual MTG game tho XD

I wonder if Amaz is going to switch from Hearthstone over the MTG permanently. He is extremely popular on twitch – but you can tell he gets bored of playing the same simply card game for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Christ, who wouldn’t?

It would be a big boost for MTG – although I’m sure he is being paid handsomely for it at this stage.

If Wizard’s can’t give away cards for free though – they still won’t compete at the genre they created. They have a tough time doing that so they don’t cannibalize their physical business.

I watched a few minutes of the video – it is there. You can hover over the card for the text box, with flavor I believe.

ahh ok. i’d think it’d probably be more handy to have the ability text at a glanve but w/e.

if cryptic actually makes a game with mechanics of the derived from game for once might be worthwhile, tho i cringe too hard at giving them money or time to actually give it a go (and for that matter not much into card games nor play hs as it is).

nevermind the potential of them emulating the retail model for MTg to it’s fullest (really don’t like the whole friday night magic thing even if i think playable out of the box decks are a huge improvement from what we put up with as kids from the game).

I love Magic so I really hope they do well with this. That said, they are going to have to figure out a way for people to earn cards for free. Wizard’s has always been opposed to the idea.

Trading, lobbies with tables, lots of tournaments, cool skins and lots of cards – they could easily do something big.

yeah they did 1:1 with irl mtg with the soe published one and it imploded on them spectacularly.

not sure the execs at wotc hasbro have learned their lessons yet given how they tend to behave with digital space implementations of their products.
