Rumor: Blizzard is buffing Battlenet with chat channels, offline mode

The dataminers at MMO-Champion may have just figured out one of the big reveals Blizzard has cooking for BlizzCon next month. It revolves around Battlenet: They’ve found a cavalcade of strings relating to grouping, plus icons and avatars, references to online/offline modes, and chat channel features, all pointing to a batch of new social features for the heretofore relatively featureless launcher.

Players are already calling it “guilds 2.0” and a “Discord clone,” which may not be bad things given that Battlenet is basically a lump taking up resources in your system tray as it stands, and there was certainly room for improvement of the friends lists that span multiple games. And the offline mode will certainly cheer up anybody who’s tired of that one guildie who still plays Heroes of the Storm bugging you every time you log into Diablo, am I right? Plus, if it’s keeping the name Battlenet (and it is), it deserves a bit of sprucing up.

Safe money’s on more info at BlizzCon in early November.

If they were smart they would have found a way to do their own add-on management as well. Blizzard is acting on all this way to late.

Ive read that discord is a pain for streamers, so if battlenet can get around those problems, then win win maybe?

Dont know the specifics, just have heard from users on multiple occasions that discord isnt preferred when streaming. Something maybe about controlling who is talking and being heard during the stream or something like that. I dont stream, so i didnt really pay too much attention, I just noticed that some streamers didnt want to use it

weird. should be a mater of role selection and permissions, same as any other voip service.

now we don’t like discord voice because it’s unreliable and has same issues we had with ts3 vs mumble but i don’t really see anyone ever mentioning any of that >>

More offline stuff is always awesome in my book.

Boosted chat features are nice too as I tend to prefer BNet chat at times to Skype.

Battlenet is my favorite game launcher by far so anything to separate them from the pack is A-Ok in my book.

I should have probably tipped you, but there is a new Battle.net App that is already offering chat since a couple of days. Sounds like old news to me….

bnet launcher has had the blizz id chat in it for years now. otherwise there’s nothing like slack/discord/etc in the current bnet launcher.

I am not talking about the launcher. There is a new app on iOS and Android with a chat function since a couple of days
