Camelot Unchained fleshes out character creation backgrounds, animations, and UI

13

This week’s Camelot Unchained update is a top 10 list with 17 items, which is the sort of thing our own Perfect Ten writers would do, so we’ve got to get onboard with that. City State says its minions have been busy working on client lockups, web tools, the dev UI, progression tracking, archery, bow models, siege abilities, a big ol’ boat, and the usual assortment of VFX, art, and animations, plus character creation:

“AJ has been working on updating the character creation process. Not only are the new animated backgrounds hooked up, but the individual screens and general flow have gotten some TLC. Some examples include: changing attribute points updates your character stat values, and we’ve added a help button, where we can add relevant info to inform your choices.”

The highlight, however, is the WIP background for the Viking character creation screen – love those runestones. We’ve got the new images and Q&A video down below.

LOL, nice.

But, all jesting aside, you are spot on and I couldn’t agree more. That’s why the whole “sprint” thing and other things that we are doing to pick up the pace a bit on the gameplay side.

I look forward to talking more about this when the sprint is completed this Fall.

The shipping wars have begun!

On a more serious note, I can’t say I’ve ever been terribly impressed by the ascetic of the game.
While the game is still very unfinished, concept art wise I’m just not that easy to impress. (as an artist myself)

It’s all very ‘standard fantasy’, despite having some truly awesome races and mechanics to work with. While the environment is steadily becoming something just a little unique, clothing, weapons and armor however is pretty bog standard fantasy.
I’m not saying it’s bad, but it doesn’t grab me or hold my attention.

I think CU has the potential to really stand out with it’s ascetic, there are bits and pieces there already, but nothing really all that cohesive at this point.
Still, where else can I play as a freaken Bean Sidhe (banshee).

Thanks. You aren’t the first, no do I expect you will be the last, person to say that to us. Like other parts of the game, the look we have today will not be the final look.

Although believe me, I know what it’s like to drive towards your own unique ascetic and being unable to do so. Sometimes you just have to settle for practical reasons.
This is by no means an easy feat.
I only hope for something off the beaten path, but I will tread it because the mechanics are that good.

Although I suppose this does raise another question. What kind of ascetic do you aspire for?
Fantasy obviously, but what kind of fantasy?

To me, it looks like something that would be at home with a dark, more twisted form of fantasy. Not literally dark, just malevolent .

I’m looking forward to seeing the world come together. All systems and features doing what they are supposed to do.

Us too. As per below, ever so slowly they are starting to come together nicely.

I love the new ship and its increased size. People need room to roam even when it is only a boat ride. I just hope the physics system does not sink her when all the passengers run from one side to the other to avoid incoming fire. :)

Great update.

I guess until they implement naval battles (not confirmed!) the ship is save :)

Ships, like mines, are off to a good start. Next we have to do more with them both, as well as the rest of the game. :)

The amount of bile and hostility people spout on their Facebook page and the snarkiness they receive from people who claim the game is dead or outdated really must have an affect on the team. I really believe in them, and I know they’ll make a wonderful game.

At the place I work, the founders have a rock that has an engraving of one of their own priciples, “We Shall Build Good Ships Here; At A Profit If We Can, At A Loss If We Must, But Always Good Ships.” I believe that Mark has a similar mindset, but with video games… which is why I have such faith that he will deliver.

LOL, we’ve heard worse, even back in the Dark Age of Camelot development phase. And since I’ve had death threats, wishes of deaths, bomb threats, etc. over the course of my career, that other stuff doesn’t bother me.

The bottom line is, as always, that we have to deliver on our goals and slowly, ever so slowly, we are and we’ve shown that to our Backers and to folks who showed up at Dragon Con. And when we finish our “sprint” we’ll have a lot more to show.

Mark knows the standard rule in our industry… “Don’t read the comments”… but he has a will of iron :) Comes from being an uber vet I guess heh
