EVE Online gives miners the tools to do the job right

EVE Online
Mining might not be the most visually impressive or glorious activity in EVE Online, but it helps to form the backbone of the game’s economy and remains a popular way for players to earn their fortune. Now with this month’s Lifeblood expansion, they’ll have the tools to mine like pros.

This is thanks in part to the new mining ledger: “The personal mining ledger tracks all of the mining activity done by a character, anywhere in New Eden. It allows pilots to see the types of ores, gas and ice they’ve collected, the areas of space they frequent, and of course their activity over time. As a pilot mines, the mining information is collected and batched into days in order to create a personal mining history.”

Corporations get their own ledger, although it is primarily focused on mining activity around refineries. CCP said that it is simply giving players this information in an unformatted state to see what they want to do with it.

It’s never been a better time to give EVE Online a try, especially with all of the upgrades to the MMO’s free-to-play offerings. Massively OP’s Brendan explained why this is a great thing for the game in his most recent column.

Neat.

Maybe when they stop offering a free trial of the combat part of their game and let Alphas partake in the Industrial side of things I’ll check it out.

uh you can take part in the industrial side. You just have to do the career agent missions for the equipment and the Venture mining frigate. Regardless of what you do you will need combat training.

Saying I can do Industrial side of the game with the Venture is like telling Trials they can play with Frigates. Can you play the game in a Frigate? Sure. Can you participate in fleet battles as a tackle Frigate? Absolutely. Are you likely to keep playing a game for any length of time as a Frigate only player? Fuck no.

If they want Alpha state to be anything more than a trial of the game, even an expanded combat trial, they need to make it so it’s viable to play and stay playing as and for mining that means barges.

And lets be 100% clear, mining is a terrible way to make money without a multi account setup to really boost things. As a single player, which is an Alpha ever should be, I would make way more money running L4 missions in a Raven/Phoon and disrupt the economy. Mining would add to the economy because no only would I require setting up contracts for freighters to come haul my ore back to a hub I’d likely have to sell it raw and let others make money off their refining skills since I wouldn’t have access to those as a free player thus actually making a healthier economy that supports even more play styles.

We might see CCP loosen up a bit on mining because that only scales with concurrent logins. Things like Industry and PI scale without simultaneous logins. I doubt Alphas will have access to more than just basic Industry.

I find mining in this game oddly relaxing – until my aspirations outstrip my solo capability then I find myself turning steam wallet cards into plex and skill injectors for that Orca.

I should return in an alpha account, live in a venture and see how far I can actually get chilling in the most sociopathic friendly environment around.

It’s about that time of year again when I get the urge to attempt the exact same way of life in EVE again.

Venture mining is abysmal. It’s really not worth it till they at the very least give us Barges.

Back when I was dual accounting I also thought about snagging an Orca since my main is fairly progressed but the reality was without 3 accounts the Orca just wasn’t worth it since two accounts could produce more doing two Exhumers than an Exhumer + Orca.

It just depends what you are mining. A full hold of massive scordite will bring you 600k isk while Pyrox and plagioclas will bring you millions. Not to mention if your doing the crafting game the resources these break down into are valuable on their own. Which isn’t bad for newbies. Hell I remember when it was tough just to get that first million. Been playing since 2004 and have multiple accounts. Just made a new one today because of this thread.

I was doing Barge+Miasmos mining until I looked at the Porpoise. Similar capacity + boosts + mining drones. That pilot is still training so I get maybe a 1/2 Barge out of her with augmenteds. I need to figure out how much of an improvement her boosts make on the Hulk pilot but I suspect it’s close to another 1/2 Barge.

The itch to spring for an Orca is real.

I mean with 3 accounts it makes sense for sure, but on two accounts it just breaks down where two Exhumers will generate more than an Exhumer plus Industrial Command ship.

They have the baby version of the Orca now, I was always planning to dual box a barge with it, since the baby orca has good drone bonuses so can rake in some ore at the same time

What is this baby orca you refer to?

The Corporate APIs are currently locked to moon mining. If you need corporate level data for anything else you’ll need to convince your miners to cough up access to their personal ledger which is extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. CCP missed a trick and should have implemented an intermediary that works at the fleet level.
