Star Citizen helps players find the right spaceship for them

With all of the many spaceships designed (and sold) for Star Citizen so far, it might be a little confusing which might be the best for any particular person or playstyle when one strolls up to the lot and stares at all of the options.

To assist with this selection process, the devs are releasing a 10-part article series revolving around a “new ship matrix” that clearly outlines the purposes and capabilities of each of the vessels available in the game for the upcoming Alpha 3.0. The first of this series separates ships into different careers and then further separates them by roles.

These roles include combat, transport, exploration, industrial, support, and competition (racing). The team went on to explain a few examples from this wide selection, such as going exploring as a pathfinder, hauling human cargo as a passenger transport, or offering tourists a lift as a luxury tour.

“With our new baseline established, going forward we intend to keep the matrix as up-to-date as possible with the latest information,” the team said. “It is our hope that the New Ship Matrix will be the starting point for your Star Citizen theorycrafting adventures, as we detail the stock loadouts each ship will begin with.”

While this specific use case doesn’t seem amazing to me, I do wish that more games did things like this.

There was an old semi-graphical MUD called VR-1: Crossroads that actually gave you a personality quiz when you first loaded up the client. Based on that quiz, it would only allow you to choose one of three different secret societies to be a faction of (out of the 15 or so present in the game). These societies were like built-in guilds, complete with their own unique housing, knowledge of the world, abilities, and goals/win states.

I always thought it was a really cool mechanism both because it was a way for the devs to directly interact with the players and try to guide them to play the game in a manner they would most enjoy, and because it allowed the devs to create a lot of mystery around aspects of the game. You’d run into other secret societies, but you wouldn’t know their goals, their backstories, or even their names. It also, at least in theory, meant that you’d end up playing with a group of people that had similar playstyles and tastes.

Long story short, I don’t think the “find your dream spaceship” series will do too much in that direction, but I think that the overall goal is a laudable one and would love to see devs do something similar more often.

The Secret World did that too before launch, a little survey that would tell you which faction you should probably join.

How bad would it suck to be a “tourist” and have your luxury liner (for which you presumably bought a ticket, or paid a fee to travel on) attacked and destroyed? In Star Wars Galaxies, yachts were exempt from PvP, weren’t armed, and didn’t fight. They were also awesome, fun to decorate inside, and great for entertaining guests and to go on space voyages. I had many fine moments of socializing whilst in orbit over a planet, taking in all that heavenly glory through the large bay windows on the side. I’d like to see that same situation in SC.
