Dauntless lowers the hammer — in a good way

Multiplayer monster hunter Dauntless is taking its first steps to a new and improved combat system — and hammer-using warriors are going to be among the first to experience the coming glory.

Last week, the team explained that it is reworking weapons one at a time in an attempt to provide more diversity and options during combat: “We’re ready to build upon that groundwork and revisit each of the weapons, focusing in on what makes it special and how to reward mastery. This means expanding the available list of moves, branching out with combos, and evolving special attacks.”

This week’s Closed Beta 0.2.6 adds dodge attacks to hammer and chain blades, introduces the Quillshot armor set, and gave swords (this is true) more “whooshy” audio sounds while they are swung. Also: “New Seagull model. SCRAAAAWWWWW!”

Is this only boss battles ? No smaller enemies or huge maps to explore?

Boom

From what I played the maps were all rather small floating islands inhabited by a few goats that you could kill for crafting mats & just 1 boss monster, kill that & then its time to head back, rinse & repeat.

That sounds amazingly boring ….

It’s a Monster Hunter-style game. The idea isn’t some massive open world for you to just run around in for the sake of “lol open world”, the idea is interesting boss battles that take 20 – 30 min to clear, all while getting materials off them to build bigger and better gear. If it makes you feel better, there are no levels, everything is gear-based.

I was fortunate enough to be gifted one of those swanky beta keys & initially thought the game was alright, a little threadbare due to its development stage but ok. Havent played it since though & if just popping out to kill me 1 nasty & then coming back to base is all the game is then I doubt I will put anymore time into it either.
