Nexon and EA to announce mystery MMO this week

Don’t let the anticipation of a certain convention cause you to overlook some other big online gaming news this week. This Thursday, Nexon and Electronic Arts will be making an announcement concerning a mystery MMO that the two mega-publishers have been brewing. We have absolutely no information about what this reveal might contain, but considering the heft of the parties involved, it could be quite sizable.

The announcement is being made in advance of the upcoming G-Star trade show, which is scheduled from November 16th through the 19th. Nexon is the main sponsor of the event but has yet to reveal its lineup of titles that will be discussed and on display.

One possibility might be the secret game that Stephan Frost is heading up over at Nexon’s Irving studio, although it could be entirely too early for the company to make this public. Any bets as to what this announcement could be? Let’s see your guess in the comments!

EA is crap (not their games, mind you, rather their monetization strategies). Nexon is less crap but prone to practicing crap tactics and dear god if Nexon NA gets a hold of it somehow they’ll make it worse.

My guess is that EA will publish an import. Which is easy for them as they can drop it if they end up not caring in the long-run (much like SOE did a bit of).

If it’s a bigger deal than that, well, i’m curious.

Just some wild speculation:

EA does own the Star Wars video game license, so it’s a possibility that it’s a Star Wars MMO project that’s designed to appeal equally to Western and Eastern markets. But that’s unlikely given that Disney hasn’t been buzzing about a secret reveal coming this fall (and probably wouldn’t want to, since they want to be “all Last Jedi, all the time”). Also, the announcement of a new Star Wars game at this time would distract from Battlefront 2, which EA wouldn’t want.

So, this is most likely a game based on a previously existing IP that has both a large Asian fan base (look at the reveal location: Korean gaming convention), and Western fan base (EA’s involvement). Given that it’s Nexon that’s making the buzz about it, this is more likely an Asian IP with a Western fan base than a Western IP with an Asian fan base.

Well, it would be hard to be worse than the last Star Wars MMO.

Star Wars isn’t as big a deal in the far East.
