EVE Online players take action to prevent a suicide

When they heard a cry for help go out in their game, these players took action right away.

A few days ago on November 5th, an unnamed 28-year-old EVE Online player from Poland disturbed fellow gamers and stream viewers by stating that he wanted to kill himself, going so far as to swallow a large quantity of pills. It appeared that recent failures in the EVE had sent him over the edge. Concerned, several players and a livestream viewer all called up local police agencies across Europe in an effort to save the man’s life.

German, Icelandic, and Interpol authorities investigated the matter, sending help to the man’s home. Fortunately, the police and paramedics arrived in time to provide the care that this troubled player needed, and the man is doing better under the attention of his family.

It is always heartening to hear stories of compassion among online players, especially from those in a gaming community such as EVE Online who are often perceived as unflinchingly hardcore and ruthless.

Hmm, been reading this site for quite a bit, I tend to not comment much on many sites I read, but after a few articles here recently, I’m a little floored at some comments I’ve read.. (Not that other places aren’t kinda toxic, just felt the need to post this, as it bothered me.)

Had this long post typed out about why I feel Internet posters tend to be so cruel and was pondering if they are like that in the real world.. but there is no point in posting it because, no matter the answer I get for why… I won’t be able to relate to it or make sense of it.

I’m different, I’m kind by nature, an empath, I feel for the pain of others, and to see others, simply not care, or worse joke and generally be jerks about it all, is very sad.

I hope the future is brighter.

I have to wonder if him being a streamer and his attempted suicide are linked. Being a streamer, from what I understand, especially a popular one, can be really stressful.

I read every single report. Nobody reported anything in this thread. It would have been 10x faster if you had just clicked report than to write this, which I might never have seen had I not flipped through the comments because EVE.

Suicide on livestream apparently isn’t new. Last time I heard about one man who did it, had viewers urging him to do it. Fast forward a couple of hours, the police came in, found body, and turned off webcam.

I find the lack of empathy in some of these comments a little disheartening.

In any case I am glad this individual eventually found the support he looks to have desperately needed. While I suspect he will have a long road to travel I hope he can eventually find some peace and balance in his life.

I wouldn’t make the assumption that it’s the game. People who see suicide as their only option probably have a whole host of other factors that have got them to that point, this is just the last straw in their downward spiral.

It’s very easy to view these things in a black/white capacity when the reality is far more convoluted.

As do you. This isn’t a joke and your comment makes you look like a childish jerk. These games serve as second homes for people with issues IRL. They use these games as an escape from the real world issues and when things go bad it can push them over the edge. Comments like yours like yours are enablers and make the situation worse.

No one is acting like you are saying anything about a child stop trying to deflect. Empathy is not something that is age gated and is not something that is limited to one sex or the other.

This is a person that for whatever reason was having a difficult time and tried to take his life.

One can hope he gets the support he needs and is able to get on with his life in a more peaceful state of mind with more balance or some perspective to his problems whatever they may be.

AKA pull your socks up and deal with it…

Unless you know what was plauging this guy you’re being ever so judgemental about what he should or shouldn’t have been doing.

Also, I’ve already said I’m through discussing this topic. My stance isn’t going to change.

“I handled life ” lol. you are far from real world as well. You cant handle anything and can die every single moment living in this world. Your so called handled life is the same illusion you made to feel comfortable like that guy did with video games.

and who are you to judge?

It’s a mental illness. The person is very sick. When you’re sick there can be otherwise less than serious issues that push your existing illness into a life-threatening situation. Such as a simple walk or jog down the street causing a heart attack in a person with an un-diagnosed heart condition, or an existing infection weakening your immune system which in turn allows an innocuous wound to cause sepsis.

If a light jog down the street causes a heart attack then you could say that a person is “weak” or “pathetic” and come up with reasons to say that it was their fault, but perhaps you can see why people would call you “cold” for saying such things.

You will, of course, have whatever views you have, yet this situation is no different.

I love how you are so thick as shit you think its just the game causing it, was likely just the icing on the cake.

People often use games to help distract from serious issues they have in their lives. Often we don’t see that mental health crises will arise parallel to a persons gaming experience not caused by but despite the involvement in a game. A venerable individual will react to any type of negative experience and I’m glad that people were there to offer help in this instance.

Eve is a REALLY poor choice for such people, as eve can be one of the most depressing games on this planet at times, one poor choice and everything can be lost.
