Make My MMO: Vampire MMO Shadow’s Kiss has almost doubled its Kickstarter ask (November 11, 2017)


This week in MMO crowdfunding, the Shadow’s Kiss devs must be stoked beyond belief, as not only has their Kickstarter reached its goal but it’s almost to double now with three weeks remaining. Thus far, backers of the indie vampire fantasy MMORPG have unlocked stretch goals including a crafting systems, ritual magic system, and some sort of tenebrous tentacles thing, with narration and music on the way when they break the $50,000 mark.

Meanwhile, Crowfall demoed its Cleric class, Star Citizen explained how space travel won’t be boring, Ship of Heroes worked on character customization, and Elite Dangerous launched on Xbox One X.

This looks messy and extremely unpolished. I have friends who could make this. But the success of their kickstarter shows that theres a real market for this genre…now if only someone could get it right.

I have backed shadows kiss, it looks very interesting and it does have appeal.

It’s the first thing I have backed since massively, was trying to listen to bree’s advice but they is something about this game that has me very interested.

The graphics and poor textures remind me of swg or the matrix so it pushes them old nostalgia buttons lol and the turn based combat is a great idea if they pull it off.

So it’s good luck to them and hopefully my $15 gets used wisely lol.

They lose all credibility when they claim to be able to get an MMO to playable for $25k…

I thought the same initially but after checking out the kickstarter page they explain that, the game is ALREADY playable, the asking amount is for finishing up, polish etc.. plus anything beyond that is for ADDITIONAL features.

There are a lot of tutorials for both Unity and UE4. As long as the server population is something the netcode can handle, it works.

The real issue lies with execution quality, and scope control.

I’m starting a new MMO and I want everyone to fund me – as cheaply as 5$! It is called the “Buy me a House” kickstarter! Stretch goals will include a new car, new computer, new washer and dryer, furniture for the bedroom, a doggie bed, living room furniture…

Why should anyone give even a single dollar to someone who claims he can make a MMO for 50k$. What’s the target schedule there? 20 years?

I know this must have been a hidden meaning, so I fixed it for all the slightly less discerning…


As much as I’d like to see Shadow Kiss get made their are just to many red flags on this one. Don’t just look at the Kick Starter but check out the website as well. At the very least an explanation as to why their so far behind schedule would be nice.

I will go out on a limb here, and state the following.

That the Vampire genre is a variation of Film Noir should be obvious. If you just allow open ffa pvp in any Vampire themed game, you get Unreal Tournament: Undead Edition. Nothing wrong with that, but it is a totally different type of game play.

When I was doing Vampire LARP back in the early 90’s, we had a solid core of Film Noir style drama fans, as well as lots of action oriented shoot em up types, with over a hundred people showing up, there was lots to do for everyone. Yet these are very different play styles, and mixing them in a video game would be a mistake.

How to foster an environment of mystery and intrigue, filled with danger, yet not an action adventure game play style, is the grand challenge of Vampire genre video game design. It is hard enough to do with a script, such as for a film or novel, where total control can be had over the action of every character, to mix in player agency, while allowing for violence, and therefore danger, is quite tough to do.
