PlayerUnknown thinks PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds doesn’t deserve game of the year

Did you know that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is up for a Game of the Year award? Probably not, because… like, there are a lot of those. Every publication has its own game of the year awards. We have our own game of the year awards. It’s only a matter of time before Cat Fancy starts publishing one, and we can only pray the market reaches critical cat-related mass by that point. But the important thing is that it’s up for one, and Brendan Greene (aka PlayerUnknown himself, the person who owns the battlegrounds) doesn’t think it deserves one.

Is that because the game is still technically clinging to early access and has not actually launched? No, in this case it’s apparently just that he thinks better games have been released over the past year. Whether or not the judges agree remain to be seen, although we’re relatively certain that the game will win at least a couple of awards. And if not, he can always start up his own game of the year awards. Everyone’s got some now.

Well, he’s right.

I agree with him. PUBG is not GOTY material, not sure why it is on there at all. It is not even a quality game. It is truly early access, with a lot of bugs and stability problems. I know it is releasing before the year is over, but that won’t change before release.

Hey, at least he is humble. Or, a little bit humble, which is fine.

PUBG is cool and all, but I distinctly remember the mod for the original ARMA series and beyond, and I just can’t wrap my head around WHY it’s become so popular. I have no need to play it, despite that being the only game in recent years that’s captivated them enough to consistently log on each night and play…

That said, the game gives a great sense of thrill and tactical/position play outweighs 90% of the time just pure gunplay skill and that’s admirable in a FPS climate that has been very competitive in terms of technical shooting skills. I understand why the game is so popular because it reminds me of the concept of drunk stories, “Oh dude, you remember that one game where…” or “OMFG that’s like the one time we got in that car and did 30 flips and exited and flew across the map with zero fall damage and I landed on the roof of that house and dropped in and Xbowed that guy in the back!”

It’s over the top, completely unpolished, and totally goofy imo. I’ve been playing a majority of my gameplay time in competitive shooter-esque games for the past few months, and idk I guess I’m just spoiled from the crispy crisp netcodes of most of the shooters coming out. ie. Lawbreakers, Battlerite, Destiny 2, Battlefield 1. I just can’t bring myself to play these cheaply coded, unpolished, poorly monetized games that are focused on a very specific ruleset like Battle Royale. I see this rise in popularity of Battle Royale, and that’s cool it’s just not my type of game. I tried Fortnite’s iteration, and same thing there. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of titles coming out of the woodwork for the next few years trying to play catch up with established IPs like PUBG. We’ll see how that goes.

I can appreciate these games from afar. Very far. lol I just want another damn good MMO game man… CU, Crowfall, Chronicles of Elyria, Ashes of Creation, and Pantheon better be good!

Eh, all of these “awards” are just a big joke anyway – most of the rational people who are looking for a game to play will be looking at “user reviews” before purchasing the game, not the billions of “20xx best yyyyy game” award stickers plastered all over game’s site/packaging.

GOTY rewards (not necessarily this show, as it is a bit of a joke usually) do drive sales, but not for popular games. They drive them for smaller games that are mentioned usually.

Did you know PUBG already won Golden Joystick 2017 for Game of the Year for PC reward? http://www.pcgamer.com/here-are-your-2017-golden-joystick-award-winners/

I agree as well, and I love PUBG.

But, there is more to a game, a truly great game, just raw sales.

A great game combines all great art forms, music, story, art, and cinematics, to entertain in a way that can’t be duplicated by other genres of entertainment. It is an immersive participation in another world.

Sappy? Yes, but very true as well. I can think of 4 other games that did it better than PUBG this year. Nier Automata, Horizon Zero-Dawn, Persona 5, and Destiny 2.

Id be surprised it doesnt come down to HZD or zelda this year… zelda will probably get it, havent played that one tho…HZD was pretty great for a brand spanking new IP from a dev that made middling to okay games prior

Both IMO are special in different ways…Zelda continues to be relavent and a force of nature for a game franchise thats almost as old as console gaming itself

Oh yes. Zelda. How could I forget that one since I literally couldn’t put the Switch down once I started it.

Excellent point.

Zelda is a really overrated game IMHO. I played it a bit and found that the lack of enemy variety and the “survival elements” pretty lame. I only picked it up more recently and maybe I was too overhyped? I dunno, I just expected more out of it. Instead, I got a game that was quite frankly kind of ugly, (textures and omg have you SEEN those trees) dips to below 30 fps, has a lot of forced survival elements, a bare bone story, and like 3 enemy types. The game has some neat physics, I will give it that. I just think the gameplay loop of: build up your food supply, build up weapons, go do shrine, rinse and repeat until you do main quest for a very small bit of the game, ect. Combat felt pretty bland as well to me.

Funny, but minus Destiny 2 and plus Zelda, the games you named (including PUBG) are the list for The Video Game Awards GotY award, which is what Greene was referring to in his statement.

I don’t see PUBG winning: it’s still not “finished” and I don’t see an early access game winning.
Nier and Persona 5 are too idiosyncratic for the mainly Western audience. (Plus Persona 5 is dragged down by some homophobic stereotypes).
So it’s probably down to Zelda and HZD. I thought Zelda was a piece of crap, so my heart is obviously with HDZ; but my heart also says it’ll probably be Zelda.

Heh. Didn’t even know the list was officially out. That is certainly my list.

In terms of what is likely? I think HZDZ has a good chance. Zelda has great pub, but it is hampered by the fact that the Switch was in short supply most of this year.

I think, as a total package, HZDZ will probably take it.

For me, it was Nier as I mentioned before. But that’s splitting hairs now. They are both great games.

I’m surprised Destiny 2 didn’t make the list.

Because Destiny 2 is a quality game, but the reality is there are WAY better games this year. When you actually look at the content in Destiny 2, not the amount, but the actual content. It is pretty bland. The level design is very bland, the campaign story is still bad, and the game still feels like the first one.

There is also a way better fps (Wolfenstein 2) that recieved far more critical acclaim across the board (Users and Critics) then Destiny 2

Reader
rafael12104

Fair enough. I’ve really enjoyed Destiny 2. I’ve been saving Wolf2 for the holidays, but I’m not sure I’ll get a chance to play it yet.

Either way, PUBG has a lot of competition and it’s not officially released.

I agree with him completely, not saying Battlegrounds is a bad game, it just does nothing innovative or really interesting, I hope it won’t be selected just based off its sales figures..

I hope this nonsense catches on in other areas of entertainment. I’d enjoy watching the Unfinished Academy Awards: “And the Oscar for Best Dailies goes to…”
