Chronicles of Elyria lays out one of its servers’ history in an animated video

If your favorite part of the Lord of the Rings films was the exposition-heavy introduction, then Chronicles of Elyria has a treat for you this week. Soulbound Studio put out a new video that details the complex back history of one of the servers, complete with moving illustrations.

Chronicles of Elyria is a deep MMORPG made up of player run countries where the developers involve the community to define the unique lore for their server,” the team said. “Each of the monarchies in this cinematic are present on the Luna (NA-East) server and are created and run by players!”

Following a couple of minutes of lore, the studio pushes its raffle of the last unpurchased monarchy. Aspiring community leaders pop in to make the case why you should support them with your money. It doesn’t feel weird at all!

Thanks to beer commercials I can’t look at images of medieval looking people drinking like in the post image above and not think to myself, “Dilly Dilly!” It’s a sickness, I do apologize.

I still find it amusing Massively has multiple orgasms anytime somebody mentions Star Citizen, a money-grubbing game that is unlikely to ever reach Alpha 3, let alone actually launch, but can’t resist a chance to take a dig at CoE.

I still find it amusing that some folks have multiple orgasms anytime CoE mentions a new funding scheme, like selling $10 tokens to vote for a king, or put out some silly video. They aren’t even in Alpha 1, let alone launch, but some people can’t resist a chance to throw more money onto the bonfire.

One, I haven’t spent a single dime on the game, because no game in history has ever been worth spending money on before it was completed. Two, I didn’t say I approve or disapprove of them selling thrones to the highest bidder. And three, copy-catting my own words in an attempt to be clever doesn’t make anything I said any less true. Massively and their readers display an unashamed hypocrisy by supporting one cash grab while denouncing another.

Down the rabbit hole.

Yep. The entire nobility thing was my first turn off from this. It just got uglier from there.

“To ensure the last kingdom slot goes to an equaly ‘powerful’ player, we’re running an election of sorts. From now until Dec. 31st, at midnight Pacific time, players can go online and purchase Kingdom Tokens from our online store. And either claim them for themselves or give them to others.

After the event we tally up the tokens and award the following prizes:
1st place will received a modified monarch package so they can rule the free kingdom ‘until fate deems him unworthy’…!”

So very apropos.

Funny though, the money shown in the video had to be less than $10 bux.

More and more I think this is just a perpetual funding scheme. If I recall they were supposed to launch by now but all I see are more ways to give them money.

Maybe not a direct scheme (and also no mmo launches on time heh).. but they are undermining the trust in their game with increasingly uglier p2w/f2p steps.

Being a monarch isn’t P2W. Instead of getting to play the game, you sit it out and take over an administrative duty that negatively impacts you, beyond not being able to run out and go exploring like the rest of the players.

Also, Dro Gul is as wrong as he was last time, CoE was not expected to launch yet. He knows this, as was explained to him last time.

LIAR. The game was supposed to be in early access no wipe Exposition right now. Keep making up lies to defend this crap. All they have done is come up with new ways to gain funds. They aren’t even in the first Alpha yet. You give money to this and you are going to get no sympathy when it shuts down.

Oh, so now you’re changing your tune? They aren’t ACTUALLY supposed to have launched, they’re just supposed to have been in alpha. I see. I don’t know, maybe you should actually say that if that’s what you mean, instead of misrepresenting the facts to fit your agenda. You make it seem like CoE is like, I don’t know, Star Citizen, which was supposed to have ACTUALLY launched years ago, and instead has delayed the latest alpha several times over the last year.

Are you daft or intentionally pretending? The game is supposed to be in no wipe early access right now. AKA launch. Instead they haven’t even had a single alpha test. All they have produced are more sales schemes and videos to promote them. Take your hardon for Star Citizen to a Star Citizen article.

Or I’ll just keep commenting here, but thank you for the advice. It was, as I always like to say, greatly appreciated.

Oh, and FYI, if you think alpha is the same thing as launch, you’re part of what’s wrong with this whole early access culture we’ve been cultivating the past several years in the gaming industry. If it isn’t a full game releasing, it isn’t launched. I don’t care what kind of moving goalpost arguments you think are clever, just shut that whole line of “thinking” down, because it ain’t flying.

OK.. its got to be intentional. They are supposed to have finished Alpha, and beta, and all the rest and be in EARLY ACCESS NO WIPE HEADSTART LAUNCH NOW.

For a guy that defends the game you really don’t know much.

For anyone who is curious, Dro Gul got those dates from a personal guess by some random person on the CoE forums. No official dates for Exposition have ever been given by Soulbound. The game is not supposed to have finished alpha, beta, or be into Exposition, Dro Gul just believes whatever he reads on the internet.

Reader

Utterly untrue. The original release date for the game was Dec 2017. Exposition which is the Headstart for high level backers was to start 3 months early.

Here’s the head developer himself defending Dec 2017 for full release of the game:
Question: The stated timeline of end of 2017 for FULL RELASE is not a realistic one. Not even close.

Caspian: Noted. I’m curious, however, what you’re basing that on? Is it based on your development experience? Your insider knowledge into what business deals we’ve been working on? Have you peeked at our Gantt chart? Maybe you feel like using purchased assets from the Unreal Marketplace won’t speed up development? Could it be you know that our choice of programming language for the server will slow down development? Anything? You got anything to substantiate your claim?

So yeah don’t listen to shrunken Quasar who is demonstrably lying to you.

Reader
CMDR ShrunkenQuasar

Well, look at that, you were right. And I spent half an hour scrounging for anything about a release date in Google, and in their dev blogs, only to end up looking the fool.

Oh well! I could try to come up with some witty way to twist his or your words around to misrepresent your argument, but even if you were worth doing that for, I’m better than that, so I’ll pat myself on the back for being the better man and walk away. I’m sure you won’t mind if I skip the whole apology and extending an olive branch and just say pfft! whatever” and walk away. It doesn’t say much for my maturity level, sure, but neither of us like the other, so does it really matter what you think of me?

Reader
Dro Gul

No apology needed. The fact you publicly admit to looking the fool is enough. Hopefully you have learned something that will help you avoid that in the future.
