Fortnite is getting a new large-scale battle royale mode

Everyone shoots everyone else!

Over the past weekend, Fortnite managed to hit a peak of 1.3 million concurrent users and 30M total users. That’s a lot of people. So how do you capitalize on that for the game’s Battle Royale mode? Why, you throw them all into an arena and make them fight. At the Game Awards tonight, Epic Games has just revealed a new limited-time mode that gives players a large-scale arena to fight in for a 50v50 battle. Last team standing wins, and to the winner goes…

Well, not being shot. That’s incentive.

There’s a trailer for the new mode just below, and the important thing is that… well, it’s big. Really, mind-bogglingly big. You might think that the current mode is big, but this is a clash of makeshift armies. Check it out if that’s the sort of thing you like to see, and don’t forget the patch notes for the new limited-time mode!

The new mode, the patches, the everything. Surprisingly strong support and legs on a game that I used to think was nothing more than a cheaper PUBG ripoff. Turns out this Fortnite is a lot more. Shows what I know, I guess.

This is funny. I was watching a Twitch stream a few days ago where someone made a joke about the new Fortnite mode coming in soon probably being 50v50 (just as a totally out there thing to say) and they were right :D

And “Save the World” continues to be pushed further and further back into its corner.

No kidding. I was excited about this game because of the co-op fort building and zombie tower defense. If I wanted to play BR, there are dozens of games that can scratch that itch. I could say they are going in a different development direction than what they started out as, but that would be understating it. They aren’t even sticking to the same genre. It’s a shame, because the core game was fun, before it was mostly abandoned.

And the biggest problems with the core gameplay still have yet to be really addressed in any meaningful way, so the PvE side is stuck in a hole that Epic pretty much purposely dug for it.

I’ve been watching Fortnite matches on Twitch lately and I hate to say it but the Battle Royale mode actually is pretty decent. And free… And monetization is based on customization (all the things the original game was first planned to have – though it still will be free in 2018).

I hate to say it but the Battle Royale mode is actually pretty decent for people that enjoy that kind of gaming. I don’t, but it’s sort of fun to watch.

It’s hard for me to hate on it after seeing all the people enjoying it and being entertained watching matches. It’s unique and different enough with it’s building stuff to be it’s own game with it’s own strategies separate from PUBG.

I still do play and have hopes for the co-op game finishing out and expanding but I can’t hate on the PvP side as much as I used to sadly.

Oh yeah it looks fun and this 50v50 mode is a great idea. It’s just disappointing/embittering that the PvE side was milked of money so heavily (still is, too; none of the issues have really been resolved yet with progression and gamebreaking bugs keep returning) and is being strung along with temporary events. Meanwhile the PvP game is their obvious focus now.

Simply put this isn’t what I bought into, and it’s screwed up that they changed course so rapidly in two months.

The game offered a unique PvE co-op experience and that gameplay is marred way too heavily by lockbox progression and overly complicated stats systems, some of which have time gates like mobile games… It’s so infuriating how badly they effed with the monetization for the PvE side only to then do the exact opposite with the PvP stuff, where they’re actually doing what they said they were going to do for the PvE side with making MTXes cosmetic only. -.-

Damn that looks awesome!

With so many of these battle titles and their popularity, I’m frankly surprised someone hasn’t made The Hunger Games MMOBA.

Did I just coin a new term there? MMOBA? ;)

The Culling was probably the closest to an actual Hunger Games styled game, but somehow it fell apart horribly and I think people are still scratching their heads at how badly the devs flopped to maintain something that was super popular on Twitch/Steam for a good while.

Like it was going to be the next big thing after H1Z1 King of the Kill, but it randomly crashed and burned due to whatever the devs were smoking.

Looks fun, I hope they release soon on steam. :)

Where is all the pve that they pitched this game on at the start?

Ask H1Z1 that same question.

From what I can tell PvE is behind a pay wall only PvP is f2p right now.

Pay wall on top of lootbox wall.

So Ten Cent owns Fortnite and thus this game, owns part of Bluehole and trying to get the rest and bringing H1Z1 to China? It’s nice to be able to afford backup plans.

Bigger news is PUBG is releasing the new desert map on the test server tonight :P

I’ve played it a considerable amount – the Battle Royale PvP side of things is all free to play already. The only thing you have to pay for is the PVE mode, which I’ve not played.

No P2W or cash shop of any kind in the PvP mode. What you pick up after you drop in is what you get.

Edit to add – I originally played this game because my friends roped me into it. I didn’t think I’d like it at all. Games like H1Z1 and PUBG look like hot garbage to me. Once I got in though, I really enjoyed the game. I usually rage in shooters, but I don’t really get that way in Fortnite.

The PvE part is already pay to win and they’re likely not going to change it in any meaningful way. PvE was pretty much to bait whales and then they did a major switcheroo to focus on PvP.
