Overwatch snags two Game Awards while Destiny 2 is honored by six nominations

Did you catch last night’s Game Awards from LA? If not, you probably didn’t miss anything super-groundbreaking, although Overwatch did quite well for itself amid a crowd of mostly single-player titles. Blizzard’s team shooter won two awards, one for Best Ongoing Game and one for Best E-Sports Game (see if you can spot what’s wrong with those awards).

There were several other online games nominated for awards but losing out to other titles. Destiny 2, in particular, had six nominations in categories such as Best Art Direction, Best Ongoing Game, and Best Multiplayer. Other nominations of note included PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (which had a Game of the Year nod), Warframe, Grand Theft Auto Online, Monster Hunter World, Fortnite, League of Legends, and Dota 2.

Don’t put too much stock in these results; after all, the Massively OP end-of-year awards are coming to you very soon, and we actually understand what an ongoing game really is! You can watch the full three-hour stream below to get the full experience if you so desire or just catch our favorite highlight.

Wait didn’t monster Hunter world JUST go in to beta? What was I nominated for?

Apparently being launched is no longer a prerequisite.

So, yeah, we really do live in a fantasy world…

You forgot Best Trendy Social Justice Game, and Best Politically Pandering Game (Overwatch)

Actually at this point League of Legends seems to be gunning to compete with the politically pandering category.

They turned one of their more interesting champions into literally a fusion of a homosexual couple possessed by an evil weapon.

More like the ad-awards. Paid for by Nintendo & Sony.

Microsoft/EA had ads too. Namely that’s how Sea of Thieves’ release date/pre-order was announced.

Bah, when the list of nominees is limited, there is nothing honorable about being nominated.

I was annoyed that some of the categories’ winners were announced with no fanfare, most notably the Best RPG category (Persona 5). Seems like a pretty important category to just sort of announce in an “oh btw” manner.

the average awards show can only feature the top dozen awards and the rest are “oh btw’s”

Agreed. But in my mind, Best RPG in this context is akin to Best Documentary at the Oscars. It’s announced in a similar way to other categories announced at the awards show, not relegated to a quick drive-by mention.

What’s with LA and this urge of theirs to parade commercial products on a stage among a fanfare, anyway?

Boy and here I thought the night of the oscars was the an exception rather than the norm…

Advertising, getting viewer ratings at a nothing cost, filling the entertainment void with something that takes no talent to throw together.

LOL! Thanks MOP for the Zach Levy clip.

There is so much to love about that Microtransaction comment. But when he looks around and says, “it’s true. It’ so stupid.” I nearly fell out of my chair.

And think about who is in that audience. Devs of all sorts, AAA execs hobnobbing, and producers of all flavors. A nice little poke that made them stop, turn and squirm just a little in their chairs. LOL!

Zach, from the old Chuck series, proves once again why he is one of my faves. Because, certainly, this was off script and not approved by EA or Activision.

This deserves another post of the following.

Gotta love Zach, chuck was a great series and Zach just seems like a genuinely nice guy who’s able to make us laugh. Fun little poke at mtx :-)

No worries. And he will be a great Captain Marvel!

Easy does it there. Get that tooth sorted so you can relax and have fun with your games.

I don’t even get how Destiny 2 made some of the nominations.

Best Ongoing Game implied a game that was a year old, yet Destiny 2 magically falls into that even though it’s only been out for a few months….

On that note, I take EA’s starwars thingie was not among the runners at all as I can’t see even a mention, whereas I’d expect awards left and right as it befits any big title from any big company.

I mean, these award shows surely ain’t cheap to organize, someone has to foot the bills right? /cough

You think these things have any integrity?

Or best multiplayer when the game literally doesn’t let you communicate with other players you meet in game.

I feel like most of these award events are basically “You’re supposed to be the popular girl, so I’m going to tell everyone you’re the popular girl, so people think I know how to pick the popular girl.”

Wasn’t a awards show, it was one long infomercial for a pile of games with some awards occasionally thrown in. Stopped watching it at one point because of that.

I did like seeing some of the trailers, especially the extended “Death Stranding” trailer. But you’re right, it did seem more like what you’d see during E3 with a few awards thrown in.

Just goes to show Blizzard can release anything and get rewards. Overwatch got 2 rewards for categories it doesn’t even qualify for.

At this point, Blizzard could pinch off a loaf, spray paint it gold, put it in a box and call it a “Special Limited Edition” and people would line up for orders.

It’s to the point where when you talk about Blizzard, people can no longer say things like “Blizzard is the gaming version of Apple or Microsoft”, you’re going to have to reverse it.

sounds rather like Apple doesn’t it
