Survivalbox roundup: CSGO’s survival mode, Astroneer’s alpha, Osiris New Dawn’s Zer, and ARK’s Ragnarok

Welcome back to another fast look at what the survivalboxes are up to! We’ve got tidbits from ARK, CSGO, Astroneer, and Osiris: New Dawn.

First up: CSGO might be getting a survival mode. Dataminers have uncovered a bunch of files, some dating back years, that suggest a number of features and combat styles that aren’t in the game, including parachutes, and island map, and “survival” references. (via VG247)

Astroneer’s research update is going live today for both Steam users and Xboxers, driving the sci-fi game into alpha.

“The Research Update is an entirely new way to play Astroneer. As part of our Alpha launch, we wanted to lay a solid foundation by updating our core game loop. Now, using the new Catalog and Research Chamber, players can use Bytes to unlock the blueprints they want. This update also includes our first module that uses streaming power, as well as changes to resource colors and some under the hood performance changes while we continue our ongoing effort to improve game stability. Also, as mentioned earlier, we are moving into the Alpha phase of development, which means that going forward, we will be adding content and changes to the game with every update until we reach Beta.”

Osiris: New Dawn recently released a teaser video for a new planet, Zer. It’s basically Mustafar. Stay out of the lava and keep an eye out for the fiery dragon things.

And finally, with the launch of the Aberration expansion last week, ARK Survival Evolved is kicking off a contest. “We’re awarding $2000 to the first person who provides video proof of them defeating the Alpha Aberration Endboss on an Official Aberration server!” declares Studio Wildcard. “Remember to include proof that this has taken place on an Official Server, you can do so by showing us the main menu which will indicate the server you’re on!” There’s also a teaser for the Dino TLC update currently under construction – it’ll herald updated t-rexes, apes, and dire wolves. Ragnarok is also nearly “100% complete internally” and expected to launch this week.

Thanks, Tanek and Kinya!

No Stationeer coverage? Shame!

Astroneer has a lot of potential and the core is solid but it needs a lot more before you feel ‘done’ playing it pretty quickly. They are constantly improving it and just the idea of exploring new planets is a huge draw. I got it last year Xmas time and played the heck out of it at first before relegating it to my Steam graveyard and dusting it off when it gives us an update.

A new Survival game called Ylands went into Early Access this month on Steam. And while you may be saying “Another one?” (I did at first) yet it’s actually pretty fun and crazy just how much stuff they have in it you can build. You start out with island survival and primitive weapons as in every other game, and can advance all the way up to massive ships pretty quickly and driving cars eventually too. The sheer amount of stuff you can make is pretty crazy as you advance along, and it also went with this unique low polygon look.

It’s sort of a normal realistic type survival with wild animals, no dinosaurs or zombies, but there is a special power resource in the game that can mutate the animals.

Besides the survival part of the game, it’s also a mini game maker. You can design games for others to play or play stuff others made.

Why do I have the feeling that the new planet in Osiris is going to be an expansion?

I highly doubt actually as the game is getting alot of heat for not fixing it’s current state of affairs. I’ve been playing off and on since the beginning. Ironically I think it was better when it first came out.

I bought it when it launched and wasn’t all that impressed, then they kept breaking more and more shit with each patch till I threw in the towel … I keep an eye on it in case it is actually worth a damn when it launches.

I think it will be pretty good once it actually launches. Its got classes, new stuff to build, dungeons, its actually getting pretty good now that I think about it, devs that actually respond on the steam forums.

Any ETA given yet on a planned launch date?

Is it worth playing as is?

It keeps popping up on the Steam recommended listing and getting my attention. Can you recommend it, or not?

I’d recommend getting it on sale. It’s grown alot and is fun. I’ve put about 50 hours into it. My biggest grip is that since its technically alpha the devs will make huge sweeping changes that can demolish what you built. On the other hand the map was completely changed for the better. For variety for instance. Also you can fly to the other planet too.

TLDR: Yes when its on sale.

Cheers. It’s on my wishlist so I should get notified when it goes on sale.
