The Daily Grind: What was your favorite NPC added to an MMO in 2017?

In 2016, we asked readers to propose new informal awards to go along with the eleventy-billion formal awards we already do. One of my favorites was Agemyth’s idea to try to identify the best NPCs added to an MMO during the year. I liked it so much I wanted to bring it back this year!

My vote would go to Naryu Virian, the snooty Dunmer NPC ZeniMax used to introduce players to Elder Scrolls Online’s Morrowind expansion. Her sarcasm was everything.

What was your favorite NPC added to an MMO in 2017?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

The only MMO I played to any meaningful degree this year was WoW: Legion. Someone else here mentioned Runas the Shamed in Aszuna, which I definitely agree with. Outside of him, I think I’d go with First Arcanist Thalyssra in Suramar.

Vaylin in SWTOR she had such a tragic backstory and for all the pontificating and power you really felt for her. I was utterly convinced they would give us the chance to redeem her, instead we got to redeeem the patricidal sociopath that was her brother whom noone cared about… silly Bioware…so disappointing.

But yes for me it was Vaylin

Yotsuyu in FFXIV. I also really want her outfit and an emote for her standing pose with pipe.

Being that the game came out in 2017 and im on PC …. im gonna go with Cayde-6.

Nathan Fillion blows everything out of the water with his performance.

I didn’t play before Plains of Eidolon, but I really like Konzu in Warframe. Many of the NPCs in Cetus are very well-voiced and have some pretty distinct personalities. That’s true of many of the NPCs in Warframe: there aren’t a huge number of them, but those that are there are unique.

mmm I don’t easily get carried away unless it’s something that catches me unaware and the only one I’d name got technically introduced in 2016, even if I played that questline well into this current year.

Runas the Shamed from the Aszuna’s blue dragonflight questline in WoW, it was heartcrushing a character and with the abysmal expectations about characters they set it stood out even more.

I loved all the voiced characters in PoF but no one was really new that stood out. All my favorite new characters in games are in single player games.

I’m a BDO player so I miss out on actually engaging and meaningful characters for awesome combat. BDO is the reverse SWL.

God help us, the ESO NPCs are all very bland. That Naryu stands out is more a reflection of how one-dimensional all the others are.

TSW is the only game where I remember the NPCs. And occasionally want to give them a hug and tell them it will all be ok.

No actual specific NPC comes to mind, though credit goes to the breath of fresh air that was the Elonian people in GW2’s Path of Fire.

Honorable mention goes to the prairie dogs in the expansion. They’re too cute!
