The Daily Grind: Which MMO had the best 2017 overall?

53

This is it, people. We are counting down to the final days and hours of 2017, and I know that there is usually this elation at shedding an old year in favor of a new and hopefully better one. But that doesn’t mean 2017 was a wash, especially for MMORPGs.

While some games faltered or died this year, others had pretty strong runs. Fan favorites like Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online, and Guild Wars 2 all put out well-received expansions. World of Warcraft announced both an expansion and a classic server. Some games made the jump to new business models and consoles. And then there are those titles that faithfully pumped out a constant stream of fun and enjoyable content over the past 12 months.

So if you were to look at the whole year overall, which MMO had the best 2017? Which title came out of this year with the best updates, the best news, and the best position for the future?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

BDO revenue in the first half of 2017 hit another record high with 64.8 billion KRW, or $57.3 million USD. B&S sold 29% more in the same period. So in spite of the relative buzz here, BDO has not caught B&S. A lot of people like BDO and it is doing well; IMO it may not be doing quite as well as the comments here imply.

GW2 is also doing well. A lot of people like the game and PoF is, thankfully and unsurprisingly, better than HoT. But I am not sure that I would call ’17 as the best of years for GW2. If GW2 were a strategic game for NCSoft, PoF would have a much larger and longer launch promotion. GW2 has worked on a mobile version and still has not launched it, does not have a console version or a great global/Asian presence. While GW2 is doing well, IMO my opinion on GW2’s health has declined in the last year.

Gonna go with ESO.

Major expansion, extra content as well, good community engagement and still has a large playerbase (2.5m monthly active players).

Others MMOs did well too with new expansions and I’ve no idea about actual quality of any of them, but ESO seemed to have the best year.

If you count looter shooters in the mix, I would say Warframe has had the best year all around in gaming. The game was already immensely popular but with the deficiencies of other titles in the genre, a lot of players just flocked to it. The saying “Just play Warframe” has become a meme at this point in many circles, and with the year culminating in the studio getting a nomination in the VGA, a lot of mainstream eyes just found out about the game.

Dungeons and Dragons Online and its Ravenloft expansion.

Let’s be honest. TSW was staring at it’s grave. Something had to be done to drastically change its course.

Now, I know the old faithful didn’t and don’t like the changes to the game. And the reboot included, essentially, a fresh start for everyone.

But it worked. Not only that, the game is thriving. I don’t know how you could have a better year than that.

It’s still staring at its grave though.

Star Citizen. They’ve taken in a massive amount of money and provided exactly nothing. They’re even selling the promise of virtual land in a game that doesn’t exist, and people are buying it up. They could sell beef to a vegetarian.

GW2 easily, Living World Season 3 was amazing and PoF was a great expansion that expanded the world and changed the game.

Well-received expansion and no major PR blunders: I’m gonna give this one to ESO, even though I’m not playing it.

Improved their PR by a long shot from my point of view.
