The Daily Grind: What’s the most expensive MMO to play at the end of 2017?

We talk about money a lot here on Massively OP. Business models. Stupidly expensive things we’ve bought. Annoying cash shops. Even things we’d like to buy but no one will sell us – sup, Guild Wars 2, please sell me clothes I wanna wear!

One thing we haven’t done in long time is actually sort out which MMORPG is actually the most expensive. I don’t meant which one has the most expensive collector editions or sparkleponies; I mean… if you started fresh in a game, today, how much would it really cost you to get reasonably up to speed with the right expansion packs, DLC, or “necessary” cash shop addons like bag slots? Do sub games that charge for expansions too still ask for the most? Or are the “hidden” fees of cash-shop-driven play significantly more burdensome? Take all that into account for today’s Daily Grind as you consider: What’s the most expensive MMO to play at the end of 2017?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

ArcheAge, if it hasn’t changed dramatically since I last played.

Technically the sub is optional, though it’s mandatory if you want to own land. I can’t imagine anyone playing this not wanting to own land…
A gear progression system where every upgrade gives exponentially more power than the last, making players with top tier gear basically unkillable and one-shotting everyone who’s just a few power levels lower.
This combined with the upgrading being heavily RNG-based, destroying (!) your piece of gear when failing an upgrade on higher levels making you start over from scratch.
Of course there are cash-shop items to enhance your chance of success when upgrading, and of course those are extremely expensive when buying them directly, or come randomly out of lootboxes.
And good luck just ignoring gear and enjoying other aspects of the game. Want to explore the seas? Ship upgrades work the same as gear upgrades. No chance to outmaneuver/outrun pirates coming for you, their ship is very likely twice as fast as yours.

This could have been the best sandbox of em all. What it is, though, is the definition of pay to win.

Yes, I’m still grumpy about it, although I quit 2 1/2 years ago.

That’s easy, anything with a box price + mandatory sub.

Don’t even go into cash shop shenanigans. FTP games are automatically out of contention, due to the base cost of zero.

“box price + mandatory sub”.

Yeah, the issue is they just add on a cash shop anyway.

Triple dip.

All depends on what’s in there to me. Cash Shops aren’t going away. I would love a Box+Sub with a honest cash shop. Too many games lie about free to play these days.

Neverwinter looked pretty bad to me. It was why I quit before investing too much into it.

Anything Craptic (they use frustrating roadblocks based on time like some cheesey mobile game that you can wait and take forever to do..or drop some real cash and avoid..uh huh, and don’t get me started on how 99% of everything better than base crap comes out of an RNG lockbox in their games..sorry craptic i lost all respect for you).

And SWTOR as their F2p model is just a ridiculous cash sink for basic feature functionality that is just embarrassing and makes me feel bad for them. They already lost my cash because of their stupidity and Bs..but because of how the F2p works they have even lost my time and interest.

Lotro if you are a new player. People get mad about SWTOR basically forcing you to sub haven’t experienced Lotro. In Lotro a Sub is not full access. You have to buy Adventure Packs or Expansions. I don’t want to hear about how you can justrgrind them. It’s ridiculous when you factor in the games age. If you have 6 expansions it’s time to up the access level of you “VIP”(it’s laughable to even call it that..).

Reader

Just for the sake of clarity, you are saying that a VIP sub should get all the expansions for free?

I think the availibilty of content being only up to level 50ish as a VIP in a game where the cap is 110 is ridiculous. I won’t say all expansions but you gotta get me to the point where I may need to buy he last 2 expansions atleast. I actually bought the 4 pack btw. The looming issue of having to spend 70( or potentially even more that that because the “smart” thing to do would be to get to 104 and buy the Mordor boost) to gain further access won in the end. To put this in perspective I will now type something in caps that I have no shame of: “I LOVE THE KINGSISLE GAMES! ” (Lol Wiz 101 and Pirate). They are where “Crowns” as a currency comes from and the whole “buy a slice” of the game monetization Method comes from. Yet, if you sub you get FULL ACCESS.

VIP needs to take people further into the game. Get rid of the need for the 4 pack and just sell the last 2 expansions for 40 bucks. I dunno man. Just seems like the Devs know they have the only “Middle Earth Simulator” and wants to milk the Super Lotro fanboy/girl crowd. I was never into Tolkien or whatever(I’m not as ignorant of him to not realize as a fan of High Fantasy MMORPGs I benefit from his work). So I can see the ridiculousness of it all.

I’m going to throw out DC Universe Online, because besides needing a sub (ftp has an absurdly low cash cap), almost half the skill points in released in the past year are from lockboxes. Fortunately, today 40 packs are on sale! (And a lot of the sp are from “collect these 16 items that only drop from lockboxes” feats.)

I agree Mike. DCUO is top of my list as well.

In the beginning after this game went f2p, this game was the best bang for your buck. 100% of the base game for free, with only like 2 paid DLC packs for 10 dollars a pop.

Its sad how over the years, its become one of the most expensive to play to completion.

For me, in particular, DCUO has been truly spectacular value for my money.

I spent on it about $300 back in early 2011 (box price + lifetime sub + about $50 of store cash when Sony was running a triple points promotion); for that price I’ve been playing the game for almost seven years as a subscriber/”Vip”, which means that I get all the Vip perks (including access to all current and future DLC for free) until the game sunsets, plus the lifetime sub converted first to a free Sony Station Pass and then to a free Daybreak All Access (in both cases including the $5 free store cash per month) valid while DCUO is still running).

I dont know if Age of Wushu THE most expensive, but it should be close. If you want to be competitive in PvP, you’re pretty much forced to throw in hundreds of dollars to buy top price school styles. You also have to pay monthly for varied things like mount.

Fresh, with straight cash, to ready to go? I’m going to say it’s still in what a person feels they need.

For most, it would likely be something like SWTOR or a sub-based experience that has box prices still. If you want every nick-knack to be able to compete in X content, that will change things. If you want every DLC or content unlock regardless of what you would get during play, that changes things.

I… don’t get the rush. If the game isn’t fun outside some rather limited stuff at the end of it, then why not just play a fun multiplayer game and stick to an MMO you can enjoy on the whole with friends?

IDK, but maybe one of these places offering the $10K+ packages… since that’s content you can’t otherwise get for most of them!

I stick almost exclusively to sub games as I feel they represent the best value with nothing sneakily hidden so I’m interested to hear which games people think are the most expensive.
