Aion prepares to move to a free-to-play model in Korea on its 10-year anniversary

Huh!

There are many possible reactions to that headline. Some of you are expressing disbelief that Aion could be moving to a free-to-play model in South Korea after maintaining its subscription model for such a long time. Some others are expressing disbelief that the game could possibly be a decade old.

Let us reassure you that yes, it is in fact accurate. Aion was released in South Korea in November 2008. So the business model is not shifting on the 10th anniversary, but near the 10th anniversary. It’s part of the game’s big REFLY update, which promises changes to class balance, leveling speed, and many new features. There will even be a new server for players to explore.

You can check out a trailer for the update just below, if you’re so inclined. So enjoy the news about the game’s fate in another region or just sit there, shaking your head and muttering that it cannot possibly be 10 years old. Time is fun!

Ah, Aion! The game that gave your toon wings and then did everything in its power to stop him flying.

Ten years.. hmmm.. I kinda recall this being one of those games that came out back when WoW was good but people were getting burned out with it so they hyped this game up, played it for a month, and then came back to WoW. I might try it if it goes F2P in the States. I’m surprised it hasn’t already to be honest. They must either have a loyal customer base here or very low operational costs.

It is F2P in the States and Europe, isn’t it? This is only about Korea.

Yeah, I am surprised it has been a decade and that it was not already F2P.

LOL it is F2P in the states and Europe. Has been for a couple of years. They even give you epic gear at lvl 10 that you can use all the way to lvl 50. so leveling is a cake walk. Level cap is 60 or higher now.

I wonder how the main NA server is right now. Aion is the kind of game i always wanted to get into and never did.

Wow 10 years for Aion. I remember when this game launched. It was the rage back then. The only PVP mmo that i ever fought against someone my lvl and had a blast. We dueled each other over and over and rested between battles to heal up. We were the only two players in the area for almost an hour. Then it got ruined when high lvl players showed up to gank us. I let them know how much they ruined two lvl 28 players fun. Just one of the reason why i hate open world pvp now.

Has it really been that long? I remember the hype Aion had before it launched and how people used to drool over its graphics.
