Asheron’s Call exiles take root in Project Gorgon

It has already been a year since one of the oldest graphical MMOs, Asheron’s Call, was shut down unceremoniously following Turbine’s decision to jettison MMOs and focus on mobile titles (how’s that working out for you, by the way?). But have you ever wondered where all of the players went after they were exiled from their virtual home?

PCGamesN did, and one author started investigating and interviewing former Asheron’s Call players to see where they immigrated. While some left MMOs altogether, others drifted toward emulators or other titles like Elite: Dangerous. But it seems like many of these refugees may have found a new home in Project Gorgon.

Guild leader Sasho is one of several who transferred his community into the upcoming MMO: “From a certain point, people didn’t log into Asheron’s Call to play the game, we logged on to see each other — the game was just the excuse. The spirit of the AC community never died, so when looking for a new place to hang our coats, the question wasn’t ‘which MMO is best?,’ but ‘where can I find my old friends?.’ And, honestly, Project Gorgon is an amazing game.”

Old AC player here and attracted to this game largely because of it. Still waiting on Steam release and beta but the urge to play is getting larger. I don’t just look forward to the game but also a much tighter and smaller community.

Yeah, there is a whole guild of them called Asherons Legacy on PG. I see many Old AC players jump in and out of the game. Of course most that have tried it and want to play are going to wait until it’s finished. I am also from AC and even when it shut down there was over 10k players. When PG truly launches on steam I am sure there will be a lot more of us.

I’m glad all two of them could find a new home

From what I’ve seen of the game on a few videos a couple of years ago, it looks really cool. I was impressed by all the skills you could learn. I also like increasing skills as you use them.

I just have a couple of questions (too lazy to research at this hour and it’s not on the first page of the website):

Is this one of those games where you have to be in a guild to survive or get anything done?(Or can you carve out a niche as a solo?)

Is there pvp? (I’m not interested in those full loot ffa pvp games that a lot of indies seem to make.)

If anyone wants to know, I checked into it and found the devs said that was only consensual pvp and that it wasn’t a big part of the game. They don’t want to get into balancing pvp and would rather focus on pve.

Makes sense, Project Gorgon’s dev couple both worked on Asheron’s Call 1&2 among other titles in their careers.

I think Gorgon developed by two ex-Asheron developers, so… Fitting.
