I know I’m a little late to the party, but I do wish to chime in on the whole “should Massively Overpowered promote lockbox games” issue. The way I see it, MO, as they are doing things now, really shouldn’t have any hypocrisy concerns and I will use BalsBigBrother’s example to illustrate.

Bal compared Massively promoting games that contain lockboxes to some health website advertising cigarettes. I would argue that is not an accurate comparison. A cigarette company’s main focus is a product that can potentially have adverse effects on one’s health. If that same health website ran ads for a major grocery food chain no one would probably think twice, even though that store might sell cigarettes. The reason is that the grocery store’s focus is not the cigarettes but a variety of items, several of which may actually benefit one’s health.

MMO’s are the same as the grocery store. Lockboxes are just a small part of the whole and when Massively Overpowered promotes a specific game they are promoting the entire game, not just one part. Now, if you started running ads for Bob’s Ultimate Lockboxes, whose marketing slogan is “all the thrill and excitement of purchasing a lockbox without all the gameplay and social hassle of a traditional MMO,” then you might be accused of being hypocritical.

That’s actually a great point and an angle we didn’t even notice. Thank you for piping up!

“Bob’s Ultimate Lockboxes” – just don’t give them any ideas. :D

Thanks for answering the question about my grand kid in Splatoon. He’s actually older than six and played on teams(which had non-family members) in Hero Squad, where he loved to play healer or tank, plays Roblox, and has watched me play TSW (when the NPC aren’t cursing!) as well as SWTOR. Of course now he thinks Roblox is for babies and he begged to be allowed to play co-op in Splatoon. This was also the kid who had a little bit of troll in him, I did fix that problem with some gentle chatting when offline :) After two weeks of watching him be frustrated in the co-op (where he would score the highest but his team would loose (!), he is starting to get it. What you might ask motivated the change? When a co-op teammate gets killed, he would go after the thingie that got the team mate. So I said, to him, “wouldn’t it be better if your team mate didn’t get killed and the two of you could concentrate on helping the whole team?” For some reason that resonated. Now his teams are winning and he is either the top or next best scorer. Whew! He worked it out. I did think you all had some good comments for the kids slightly younger or not ready emotionally to do the group stuff.

p.s. I purchased Portal Knights when SkySaga was killed, thinking it might SkySaga like. Of course, it’s not. I also died repeatedly on the 3rd or 4th world. The crafting was fun , but I can’t say I actually enjoyed the rest of the game play.

I wonder if we will ever get to set foot in Elsweyr proper.
I’d like to actually see the various types of Khajiit beyond the anthropomorphic cat breed we see everywhere else in the setting.

Although one has to wonder when you see a house cat somewhere in the world…is it really a cat, or is it just an Alfiq spy.

Really enjoyed your lockbox cometary from the mailbag and I totally agree with you. You can not fix anything by avoiding it. For myself I vote with my wallet and play their game despite their choices I disagree with.

Studios: I cannot see governments letting studios make money from “gambling” without getting their share so be careful with how you try to soak players for cash.

Thank you for answering my question.

After I sent it I was a little worried that you might think I was attacking you all at mop or something. All I was really looking for was the thought process behind why you do as you do, which you explained really well.

I agree its not an easy thing to have to reconcile and I have gone through a similar thought process myself even if ultimately I ended up falling on the opposite side of the lockbox buying fence.

I definitely didn’t think you were attacking us! It’s not always pretty. All we can ALL do is our best to keep paddling through it! (And rambling. I ramble a lot! Sorry. :D)

Purity spirals are the death of any group (whether it be ideology, companies, clubs etc). It may feel good to “stand on your principles” but it’s easy to take it too far just for a personal feeling of vindication.
Outside of legal/not legal, groups need to have very basic guidelines which are also flexible to what is practical and maintain a long-term vision. Massively-OP is the singular best MMO news site on the web because they have avoided the trap of outrage farming and purity spirals and it makes for a friendly (and at times contentious community), but even if we argue over one article we can share in the joy of another.
