EverQuest trots out a new lizardy lockbox

Even with all of the discussion going on about lockboxes these days, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down the release of such packs in some MMOs. EverQuest, for example, is preparing a new Iksar Heritage Crate on the marketplace for January 17th.

This lockbox retails for 799 DBC and contains a chance at several different lizard-themed items, including Iksar armor, familiars, teleport items, a mount, and even a music box. Keep buying and buying and buying these lockboxes, because if you can get all of the teleport items or familiars, you’ll also net a (drum roll) NEW TITLE. Can you feel the goosebumps?

Daybreak is giving subscribers the option to grab a lockbox instead of their normal monthly stipend of 500 DBC. There’s an expiration period on this box, as it’ll disappear from the marketplace on April 17th.

So loot boxes have officially polluted everything back to the Daybreak of MMO history (or close enough).

A lizardbox?

Been years since I played EQ1. Level cap was 65 when I started and it was my first ever MMO. No cash shop back then although EQ2 had it last time I played that game about 2-3 years ago.

I miss some aspects of that game but it hasn’t aged well and I’m still miffed with DBG over EQN dying. I haven’t touched any of their games since then, I had high hopes for EQN even if I didn’t think they could deliver on all fronts.

I know a couple of old Guildies were still playing at a low level even just 2 years ago when one that I was playing FF14 with had a twinge of nostalgia and went back. I do miss my Bertoxxulous worshipping human SK and cleric sisters I used to play the most. Not many human clerics could hang out in the Overthere and just wave at the dragoons, fun times!

I have a few NSFW ideas what the new title should be.

This lockbox retails for 799

That is $7.99 USD. :|

I imagine the dedicated players have a bunch of Daybreak Funny Money piling up from their subscriptions, so I guess it makes sense to try to get people to use that so they might want to buy more or subscribe more.

Looks to me like they overcharge for the crate in part to make the subscription look like you are getting even more *value* than the $5 in DBC.

It’s not a lockbox, it’s a Heritage Crate! :)

I would love to know what the populations of active players are in EQ and EQII these days.

Good enough for them to pay for development costs of new expansions at least every year since their releases. That probably isn’t super expensive to make for those older games, but those may be the last two games Daybreak has to maintain any good will at all with their players. I still love Planetside 2. People still seem to like DCUO. But EQ1 and EQ2 are the most important games Daybreak has to keep me from being utterly disgusted at them.

I have no hard numbers as that is a closely guarded secret by DB ( assume they are low compared to other MMO’s) however the population seems higher on EQ1 that EQ2.
