Fan creates a Final Fantasy XIV UI in Final Fantasy XI

Sort of like jingles.

For those of you who were wondering when Final Fantasy XI started supporting add-ons… it didn’t. The game has never supported add-ons, and using Windower and its associated add-ons is totally not allowed and could get you banned. Except that it won’t, and functionally no one is particularly concerned about it. So you have players who use the software and its various functions to do awesome stuff like turn the game’s interface into the interface from Final Fantasy XIV.

Obviously, it’s not a perfect translation; FFXI is a very menu-driven game and FFXIV is not, there are lots of different mechanics at play, and the hotbars alone are a rather experimental bit of additional coding. But it’s pretty neat to see the older game gussied up to look like its newer cousin. And if you want something to slightly ease the adaptation curve, you could do worse.

This is what add-ons exist to do.

This is pretty impressive. Also, shoutout to Windower. I can’t imagine playing FFXI without it.

It was a lifesaver

Honestly, FFXI’s obtuse UI has long been the biggest barrier for entry to get me into it. I had originally checked it out at the same time my brother was checking out WoW in like 2004/2005, and after dabbling in eachothers accounts a bit, WoW won out, a large part of it being that it was far more user friendly. While I’ve done a couple returns to XI over the years, they never stuck, as I returned to WoW again the first time, and then XIV took over my MMO life. Something like this may be just what I need for XI, as I still have this Final-Fantasy-Completionist need to at least play through the main scenarios.

I really just wish it was easier to play two MMOs at the same time while still being a functional adult =X

FFXI’s UI has a certain charm to me, but I understand 100% how it’s a barrier to entry. The UI alone is one of the biggest reasons I haven’t tried to bring some friends I met in newer MMOs to FFXI when they’ve been looking for a different game.

Laugh for me, gear swaps and macros…..

Oi, gear swaps. I got some flak for it, but I completely ignored gear swapping. By the time I got serious with FFXI, it wasn’t the hardcore game it once was. Macros were one thing. And even though gear swapping was technically a kind of macro (I assume), that was just a step too far for me.

I might have caved if I had ever been on the cutting edge of content, or the hardest content that existed. But .. I wasn’t. So I was content to not bother.
