The Daily Grind: Have you ever taken drugs in an MMORPG?

Something like that, anyhow.

Probably my favorite screenshot in an MMO is the one I took back in 2003 or so, when my Star Wars Galaxies character was selling handmade spice out of her backpack one by one, before anyone I knew even had factories. After buying a few Neutron Pixies from me, one of my customers whispered to me some advice. “You’re kinda small and adorable for a drug dealer,” he noted. “You may want to get a scar or something for the next transaction with someone.”

That conversation popped into my head this week when I read about the ESRB’s guidelines on the depiction of narcotics in video games, which have apparently been reinforced by a recent study on top-selling console games that found plenty include various drugs as boosters, some in combination with other drugs, some without any associated side-effects. SWG, of course, had really nasty side-effects, a long-lasting downer that often made the spices not worth using outside of critical fights or duels, but still, the whole thing was still very cartoony. With or without my scar.

But what about other MMOs? I can think of only a handful of true MMORPGs that touch this sort of mechanic; most just seem to skirt the question altogether, no doubt to avoid that ESRB M sticker. You guys can probably think of more examples. Which MMOs have “drugs,” did you think they were problematic, and have you ever taken drugs in an MMORPG?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

For me the drug-game was Neocron. Among other things, my character was not even able to drive some vehicles without taking some drugs. And yes, there were also the “damn, i need another hit” moments. Flying at low altitude when the drugs ran out and your withdrawal kicked in, monocrome screen, blurs, distorted vision… that meant my character quickly got a second shot.

Mind you, the next shot only reduced the effect, and it was stacking up, so at the end of a longer guild operation my character screen still was in a permanent haze and it took a long time without using drugs to get clear vision again. :)

It was very cyberpunk, but i wouldn’t expect so strong promotion of drugs in any MMO again these days. The controversy coult very well kill such a game today.

I never played it, but Neocron always sounded interesting as heck, and I remember this being one of the things that grabbed my teenage attention. I was still hooked on Asheron’s Call though, so it never happened.

Killing and rampant murder day in and day out is absolutely fine, just keep away from that weed son!

I’ve “taken” skooma, gotten drunk many times in several games, etc. I’ve also killed lots of people in the same games. Fortunately no real people were killed or drugs ingested as a result of this.

Did anyone else get some really creepy ads on the side of this article offering “Free Legal Advice” “& Side Effects”, etc.

Bree, you got to stop reminding me of SWG and its player’s agency.

Wait, skooma is not a gluten free, free ranged soy based non-gmo topping for my sweetroll!?

Man that explains a few things I experienced in Oblivion.

Nobody mentioned NoNo Powder in Glitch? That was the ultimate high. You could work without losing energy for some length of time (6 minutes?) And then you had the “NoNo Crash” where you lost energy and mood until you died. Then you went to Hell and had to squash grapes until you resurrected and then you were “pooped” for some time after that until you could restore full health. It was still worth it if you could crush all your Sparkly, though. Yeah, that was Glitch.

Remember back in the day of Tabula Rasa where Richard “Lord British” Garriot sold the game’s quests as “player decision”? And that those decisions would matter. With the example being the drug smuggler to either steal these drugs/medicine for a dealer or to instead give them -for free- to medics at a clinic. And that literally because the ONLY quest that had multiple pathway options. And that quest was in the starting zone! Ya…because of promises.

Thanks for reminding me with this Daily Grind. >:-P
