Persona series dev Atlus could be considering an online RPG

Would you be up for Persona Online? This might not be as far-fetched as you may think.

Atlus, the developer of the popular PlayStation RPG series, put out a recent survey in which it asked fans what direction they would like to see the series head. One of these options is a “Persona series online RPG,” which certainly teases the possibility of an MMO emerging from this popular franchise.

The studio had a lot of other options in the survey too, such as bringing the franchise to the PC and remaking older titles. The latest entry in the series, Persona 5, was a big hit and followed a group of Tokyo students as they used their hidden identities to fight against The Man.

I’d rather have them release Persona 5 on PC. Atlus releases stellar Single-Player games but I just can’t imagine what they do as an Online RPG.

Well. Hopefully it is better than Imagine, not that that would be saying much.

What about the running a flipping PSO2 server as they’re owned by Sega

Yes please!

Aside from being a franchise spanning decades with rich lore, there’s the fact modern settings are sorely lacking. If an issue is there, it’s the fact they might have a hard time appealing to traditional MMORPG western audience if they stick to the core material and confine it all to a pure japan metropolitan setting.

Going “global” might be a tad beyond what they aspire to…

Why? The best part of Persona is a single player story. I rather they stick to that with the series than try and break the mold for an online experience. Hell, just to get it to work as a multiplayer you’d have to change the fundamentals of combat from a turnbase JRPG to some sort of real time combat.

Shin Megami Tensei would be a better game to be an online game, not just because there was one (or is one?). SMT has much more room for open world experience of an MMO. Plus running around in the demon apocalypse would be pretty cool.

It would be a great series to bring to the online world by putting a heavy emphasis on social gameplay, such as using your in-game phone to stay in touch with your friends, perhaps even on a social network, and then our avatars could use their phones or computers to dive into this game’s other world, where the shadows would be. In fact, the concept could easily be adapted for our actual phones, and I’ve been thinking about this for a while.

Also: PLEASE bring the franchise to PC. Pretty please.

As others said we went down this road before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_Megami_Tensei:_Imagine

Another reminder that the core series is almost unknown in the west compared to the spin off. Its an odd situation.

Persona’s more optimistic and stylish presentation does a lot for its wide appeal imo.

An MMO Would be a tough translation in terms of social skills and the life sim aspect. Might lose what persona gets a lot of its charm from

I tried Imagine and I found it crude compared to Final Fantasy XI which was a premium title at the time. It’s a great overarching franchise with rich lore base to mine. The console products they’ve been releasing for years now, especially the main Persona titles, are very good; but if they don’t do an MMO well, it’ll backfire.
