Ship of Heroes deep-dives villains and new ‘body-conscious’ female hero costumes

If you cared about the lore in City of Heroes, you were probably pretty attached to certain villain groups, right? Who doesn’t remember Circle of Thorns fondly? And what about the Carnies?!

Upcoming indie superhero MMORPG Ship of Heroes is all about that action and has some new details out this week on its own customized villain groups thanks to its latest stream.

“This is the first look at details of expanded villain group costumes showing four distinct villain groups in Ship of Heroes,” Heroic Games’ Justin “sensible” Roberti explains. “The Villain Groups shown are: The Nagdellians, ruthless alien invaders bent on domination of the Justice; The Prometheans, a secret sect of Cyborg/Dark Magic Users that wish to create a super race of cybernetically-enhanced humans to rule the Justice; the Yekus Mercenary Clan, a widespread group of soldiers for hire that serve as muscle for the highest bidder; and The Red Sigil, a group of powerful magic users committed to revolutionary overthrow of the government of the Justice.”

You’ll also notice that a female toon is on display, complete with “traditional body suit and some cool accoutrements.” Says Roberti,

“A new, body-conscious female hero costume has been introduced for heroes that wish to enter combat in non-restrictive and alluring style. This costume is specific to female characters and includes requests made in the Character Creator Alpha including thigh-high boots and elbow length gloves.”

We’ve got the new screenshots, plus the recent stream and a villain video down below.

While Superhero games normally get a bit of a pass on the costumes, because they’re normally equal in the amount of skin the males and females can show, this one is starting out a bit lopsided. I’m not really comfortable with that much bare ass on the female costume unless there are going to be male costumes with that much bare ass as well. Skimpy is one thing but that’s a lot of ass to be showing off on just the female avatar. What is this 1999?

Anyway as long as the male options come along just as skimpy it will be fine. Otherwise that female avatar is a bit outdated. “But you don’t have to be like that, it’s a choice.” Yeah, as long as we get the same choice on the males that will be great and fine.

Notice that I’m not asking for the females to be covered, so the juveniles that use video games to get glimpses of female skin can calm down, I just want to make sure the same skimpy costumes are available to male avatars as well so those on the other side that are attracted to male skin can get the same jollies and thrills, or “costume options” if you will. It’s about equality and all, not prudishness.

I still don’t understand the whole “ship” thing…is it me or is it a bit weird??

It’s kinda weird, yeah. But it gives the devs a lore excuse to give players access to many different map types in the form of the various worlds the ship travels to. One week it might be a wild west world the next it might be an urban high science world like Trantor or Coruscant.

And it looks like the Rikti have gotten a graphical upgrade in Ship of Heroes. ;)

The main home “city” is actually a moving ship. The skyline isn’t a real skyline there, it’s a projection made by the ship to look like a skyline. They’re inside a giant moving space ship. They go down off it to various planets and things to do missions and fighting. It’s not really that weird.

@Winter: I’m with you. The whole ship thing just makes no sense to me. Where does a real Villain get to have his secret volcanic base? How, exactly do you hide a secret organization on a ship? There are a lot more places to hide on a planet, you can’t just go digging an underground base on a ship.

The screenshot leaves me wondering if the eyes are fixed, or do they move around and blink?

So happy with every progress update. CoH was so rich with lore.. I still read the comics on rainy days and it all comes rushing back

I’ll be honest, that’s not what I thought of when I read “body-conscious.” If anything, I thought the costume would be more conservative. Not that it looks bad, though. I like that the female model is healthy and fit looking without being crazy over the top T+A like some games.

Circle of Thorns was so iconic in CoX! One of the groups you fought for the majority of your time as a hero or villain. Probably my favorite group as their theme was cool, they had some great character models, and a lot of variety among their magical powers.

I loved the Clockworks, the Freakshow, Nemesis, and all the rest too but none like CoT.

Also a fan of the thigh highs and the long gloves for the character creator shown here as well.
