Shroud of the Avatar plans launch celebration while Reddit community debate sub’s existence

A rather unique shindig is being planned for Shroud of the Avatar’s launch this March. Portalarium announced that it will be holding a release party on March 14th at the Bullock Texas History Museum. Only about 100 backers plus various press and guests will be able to attend and enjoy a short concert with Shooter Jennings.

Around that time, Shroud of the Avatar will also be present at SXSW Gaming Expo from March 13th through the 17th. Richard Garriott will get a special honor as a focus of a panel covering the game’s history and future.

Over on Reddit, an interesting poll is being conducted. A brand-new mod who took over r/shroudoftheavatar is now asking fans if they want the sub to remain open in light of several other subreddits covering the game and the sub devolving into a mess of trolling and outright attacks. “If you want this to stay open, posting is the second best thing you can do,” the new mod said. “Make your case not just here, but out there. Provide some things worth talking about. Win or go out swinging.”

I’m not going to post a long winded message with “facts” or whatever that have no factual website links to prove anything.

The best way to sum it all up is this:

Go get a FREE account and start playing for FREE. If you like the game and you are enjoying yourself – consider upgrading your account.

DONE – Simple – Period and to the point.

Everything else does not matter at the end of the day as long as you are enjoying your time because time is an invest you can never recover.

Look me up ingame – my character name is Drahcir. I’m a new player who discovered this game last month. I was not a backer or anything else because I didn’t know about this game until now. I am an old Ultima Online beta tester and long time player even after beta. I am from Chesapeake – St Drahcir was the name from the old guild Saints of Britannia.

Well, the SoTA sub is being closed as the mod posted this morning. Looks like that will put RAW front and foremost in the Reddit SoTA world.

And the game launches in just 2 months… or candidate launch.. or whatever it is called. This game really is a disaster of a train wreck.

Of all the odd things the Shroud of the Avatar team have done over the years I think having
Shooter Jennings at their event is the strangest :)

Actually, when Shooter Jennings released his album Countach, the launch party was held in-game (that was way back before persistence even). It was actually pretty entertaining. And in that context, it’s not so strange.

Wow. No idea he did that. I have seen Shooter play live once but admittedly am not very familiar with his life. Is he big into video games? Trying to understand why he would have a launch party for an album in a fantasy rpg MMO.

They didn’t say if Tracy Hickman would be at the party or not, I think he wrote the storyline and all the quests. If he’s not there that will strange.

This game is launched, it has been for over year. This is just another shameless grab for attention for very poor game that has not been doing very well.

I’m so tired of the negativity gamers spew. It has to be the most negative environment I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s all about attacking and tearing people down, trying to destroy and ruin projects if people don’t get their way…

It’s exhausting and a large part of the reason why I stay away from most forum environments now.

I miss the days when being toxic was considered an anomaly and people were shunned for continuous bad behavior. Yeah, there actually was a time like this on the internet, but it’s going back 10-20 years, and bad behaviors are spreading like a contagious disease. It takes a lot of work to maintain a healthy mentality in today’s gaming environment.

On that note! I’m happy to see this project getting it’s official release for the Avatar team. Richard Garriot knows how to throw a good party!

It is a breakdown of society as a whole not just in the gaming community. Although you could successfully argue that gamers was it’s alpha phase. The nuances as to why run deep and wide. From the common anonymous nature of the internet to a reaction high school/life abuse in a more comfortable setting.

Depends on the group you’re joining. Toxicity always existed. Anonimity just makes it easier to propel.

@ Toy Clown – You are living in a bubble my friend, this bliss that you once enjoyed online is anecdotal at best. There has always been toxic people everywhere, been this way since humans started to walk this planet.

I usually argue this too – that online gaming communities in particular were always toxic, all the way back to UO (and surely before). In many cases, it was a superficially politer version of toxicity (uberguilds who harassed people off servers vs. people teabagging your corpse and doxing you on twitter), but it was always there, affecting some gamers far more than others.

That said, I’d be lying if I said this past year and change hasn’t been particularly awful, even more than the asshat spike in 2014, and I have a pretty good idea why.

I disagree. Every game attracts attention from both sides of the spectrum, always been this way. I’m pretty sure if you had percentages, the amount of negativity nowadays would be pretty much the same as it was ‘back then’, it just feels much worse now because gaming has become mainstream.

I’m glad you enjoy the game, so just focus on that. Do your thing and have fun. Ignore the negativity. But do not make the mistake of dismissing it for it is well-deserved.

You must not spend much time in the political sections of the Internet.

It’s all about attacking and tearing people down, trying to destroy and ruin projects if people don’t get their way…

Spot the deliberate attempt to once more blame the victims of harassment for what happened to them…

The reality is, Portalarium deliberately lied to their backers. They are on record admitting they made the kickstarter only to get out of bankruptcy from their previous failure in the mobile market.

Richard Garriott claimed the game would be Buy to Own, with no microtransactions, and the Kickstarter said it would be a quest driven game like the classic Ultimas, with selective multiplayer. But they knew at the time they planned to make it a F2P MMO game with MACROtransactions and put Real Money Trading at the centre.

And they were signing contracts with Publishers in 2015 based upon this, whilst telling the backers for another year and a half they needed to keep funding because they were avoiding publishers.

They’ve since spent some of that backers money on Cryptocurrency, supposedly to later on tie the game into pushing the price of NeverDie tokens. They’ve also constantly diverted funding to their other careers; SeedInvest’s board has a Portalarium board member on it. BrightLocker is Starr Longs other job. The Wellness App they tied in game is built by former Ultima 7 staff…

And every time someone realised the game was NOT what was promised, was getting later and later, or more and more avaricious for insane amounts of money…. the foul and toxic community resorted to abuse and then outright criminal harassment to try and silence them. Either because they were out to make a profit from the RMT that poisoned everything about the game, or just because they were utterly disconnected from reality and still believed in the Shroud Cult Bubble.

But yeah, Richard knows how to throw a party…? How many people went to the last SotACon? Because the photographs show only 16 at most. But well done on quickly getting people to come here and brigade with positive comments to try and hide the truth yet again.

Remember when Honesty was a virtue, back in the days of Ultima IV? I’m ashamed to have ever supported this betrayal of everything the games ever tried to teach people…
