“Show me a giant sheep” HAHA! :-D

It would have been really interesting to be there the first time erosion or a flood revealed the fossilized bones of a large theropod like Tyrannosaurus Rex or Allosaurus, and the legend of “dragons” was born in human myth and culture.

Dragons DID exist… they were just called dinosaurs. :)

‘Tis true :)

Oh Sip, Sip, Sip! Your missing the point on dragons. Dragons aren’t just overly glorified wyrms. You see, dragons are just as important in MMORPGs as Heros. Heros are a standard trope, right? Well, so are Dragons.

Why? Because Dragons are symbols of ultimate power, generally. The ultimate challenge. And the ultimate heroic act? Yup, to kill a Dragon.

Some are the epitome of evil. Afterall power corrupts, and many are so damn old that it is inevitable.

And yet, these creatures are much more than just that trope. Take a look at the artistic and musical renditions of Dragons in and out of games in general in you will feel their variety. Because even these the most powerful creatures can be smart, kind, even loving. They can be protectors, guardians, and even teachers of the diminutive other races. They love their families, they care about their friends… Indeed, dare I say it, in many ways they are the best of what we aspire to be.

And theirs is a sad story. They are destined to fade away. To die out. And, it seems that it can’t be helped.

But the purity of power and can not be better represented than in a Dragon.

Think of this way. Game of Thrones would not be Game of Thrones without Dragons!

Now, I have played a lot of games over the years and still do. I think that games need to show more of the other side of the coin when it comes to Dragons. Nevertheless, when I encounter one in a game, I know what is being referenced. What is at stake. And at least for me, it doesn’t get old because it is part of the hero’s journey I’m on in these adventures. I expect them to be there, at some point, just like everything else that makes an MMORPG an MMORPG.

I loved your comment – I couldnt have said it better myself! Dragon represent the entire range of our heroic fantasies in MMOs. :) Come to think of it, I did once blog about this in greater detail and came to very similar conclusions as you did –

Nice! Very well written. Thank you!
