Sea of Thieves runs another stress test, talks pirate customization (or lack thereof)

Just in case you read that headline and made a mad dash to this first paragraph with the hope of seeing that Rare has changed its mind on making players pick Sea of Thieves characters from a random generator, sorry, it is not to be. According to the team, this generator has been in the works for four years now and the devs are pretty proud of it.

It is certainly strange to hear the studio claim that it wants players to “be the pirate they want to be” while taking direct character customization out of their hands, but it sounds like a moot point at this juncture. This doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to customize your character at all; you will be able to collect and wear different cosmetics as you progress in the game.

Meanwhile, a third stress test is taking place this weekend as Rare attempts to get Sea of Thieves shipshape for the launch later this month.

I find it hard to believe that someone who was excited enough to buy this game would be turned off so much by lack of avatar body customization that they would refuse to purchase it based on that alone.

The audience Microsoft is hoping to get with SoT is more likely to be disappointed in the lack of variety in things to do.

You can be the pirate you want to be, you just have to take hours on end pressing “re-roll” until you see some random generated looks that you like. That’s certainly better than just letting people design the look they want from the start (can you feel the heavy sarcasm?).

To Rare: People aren’t going to think “This is my very own Rare made character!” (like they said people will be thinking) when using a random look generator. Yes, if you hand design each and every different character that someone can pick with far different looks for each one (difficult if you get the player base you’re hoping for) and take it off the list of being able to be used by anybody else after it’s picked, they may think that, but you can’t just use a random generation system and have people feeling that way. You’re just making character creation a painful and long process.

Maybe this is what they want. If you take hours on Steam re-rolling to try to get the right looks, you’ll have gone past the point of being able to return the game. You won’t have enough time to go in the game and see it’s basically a gank fest and come out for a refund.

Just tried, looks beautiful but yes, just a pvp gank game, not much you can do alone, community is heavily aggresive (not complaining but if you are just for exploration I wouldn’t recommend it).

That’s what I guessed. I’ll watch on Twitch.

So, they are justifying their shortcut in character creation. Sure it is a generator, but there is no customization to the nth degree like in other games. And that is a drawback.

That they spent money and time creating this scheme doesn’t justify it. What does justify it for them is that less dev cycles were spent on character creation and customization. And that doesn’t sit well with many of us as we can see below.

For me, it isn’t a deal breaker. I’ll play the game, but I will whine and cheese their forums for character customization to be added. And certainly, if there are too many issues early in the game’s life, the lack of this feature might be the tipping point for me to leave.

The water looks amazing. I love games where you can sail and explore. I almost bought just because of that, but came to my senses.

The avatar thing – I don’t think it’s something to be “proud” of, but I could live with it.

I’m just waiting to see if it becomes a griefer’s paradise. I may enjoy watching the game on Twitch more than actually playing it.

If I can’t roll up a random character I like I will end up not playing the game as long. Yes, it is that important to me.

Maybe during development they realized that PVP was going to be the main gameplay loop and the character creation process was a deliberate decision to discourage carebears from playing their game.

It’s not moot, just speak with your wallet.
