The Division celebrates two years and 20 million players with free stuff and events

Let’s keep the anniversary articles coming, shall we? Ubisoft is celebrating two years since The Division’s launch as well. The company now counts 20 million players (twice the population of Sweden, sorry Sweden), with an average of three hours played daily over just the past three months. Seems high, yeah?

And all 20 million of those players should probably hop in again over the next month, as the game will be dishing out weekly global events (starting with Outbreak this week), handing out a free sneeze emote (yes really) and offering classified gear sets. Also, some dude on PS4 is obsessed with resistance waves, having done almost 8000 of them since update 1.8 (what the what?).

According to last night’s state-of-the-game Twitch stream – also recapped on Reddit if you can’t stand live videos – all you’ve gotta do to get the free emote is log in during the month of March and hit up the reward claim vendor. All the shiny goodies are tucked down below.

No Alex is safe.

On a more serious note I’ve wanted to try and hop back into the game but good lord does my level 18 or so character feel horribly underpowered, and I’m not even sure if it’s due to gear or what. But everything felt bullet spongey as heck and like my character was made of paper.

Is 20 million alot nowadays?

I see games like PUBG and Fortnite with over 300 million players, and say to myself “hmmm, maybe my sense of scale has been skewed…”

For a game about the response to a killer flu pandemic, a ‘sneeze’ emote seems in poor taste. Wouldn’t your teammates be expected to react with get-tf-away!

their employers required a doctor’s note for the super flu. :P

apparently at some point ubisoft quietly added lockboxes of some kind to this and grw. idk what they drop at all tho. div also got it’s own cosmetics cash shop which didn’t look terribly appealing vs the stuff you can get from gameplay with a little dedication to helping out locals with food and water :P

anyways good to see it’s doing well despite the orignal hate storm of youtubers and streamers spending all day looking for exploits to make money off that had previously been promotional partners for the game.

personally i won’t play anymore primarily because the controls use different keys for same things that gtao has movement et al wise and i don’t want to fuck up my muscle memory for gtao. as wlel my gear is in such shambles and i don’t want to do the fairly reasonable now grinding to get to an ok place with it >> XD

Yeah, i am having a blast playing it now but my friends all laugh at me when muscle memory takes over and i do something totally stupid because of keybindings (which i should change lol).

i kept trying to do things with gtao keybinds + my gear is worse than even the guy who just finally hit level cap so after that i just gave up and opted out of joining them anymore. :P

the cash shop is purely cosmetic.

Backpacks have cosmetic skins now which the cash shop sells along side weapon skins and new outfits.

It wasnt very “quiet”. They hyped it up quite a bit.

And as others have said, its all things like weapon paint skins, and cosmetic clothing. The game already has TONS of these that you can find/earn in game without doing these lootboxes. And, the way the boxes work, you can earn boxes by doing things in game at a reasonable rate.

i missed the hype for it. i saw alot more hype for other post paid dlc content but also haven’t clicked on many articles for it since after the 2nd paid dlc or so. and had otherwise not seen anyone mention it anywhere at all when the game has come up.

There is even a “quest” you get telling you to go to the lock box vendor, which even gives you free stuff after teaching you about the system.

sure, but i hadn’t played in like 2 years and hadn’t seen any mention of cash shop or loot box.

i did infer that the new exp bar that was filling up would probably give me a box when it filled.

The classified global events are fun to jump in if you like a bit of shooting with some gear grinding. I probably won’t play all the events in March but I will pop in for a couple at least before I get distracted by something else :-)

I like to pop in for a quick world boss farming run now and then. Maybe grab a couple of weekly HVTs.
