Grim Dawn announces Forgotten Gods expansion for 2018, confirms Xbox One port

Remember last week when Crate Entertainment teased something really big for OARPG Grim Dawn? That announcement is now here, and as you probably predicted, it’s a brand-new expansion. As you probably didn’t predict, it’s called Forgotten Gods. If you did predict that too, you should probably go play the lottery or something.

“In the Forgotten Gods expansion, players will journey beyond the bounds of the Erulan Empire, traversing burning sands, lush oases and volcanic wastes to reach the sun beaten ruins of a city with secrets that should never have been disturbed. The flames of a forgotten god have been rekindled, sending ripples through the Eldritch realm and sowing terror even among the Witch Gods themselves.”

Crate is promising “a thrilling new chapter in Grim Dawn’s story, a new gameplay mode, quality of life features, hundreds of new unique items and more” in a “densely packed new addition” that just so happens to already be “well underway” in development. Launch is expected in the bottom half of 2018. And yes, the devs are still working on the Xbox One port, “which is coming posthaste.”

Wondering what to do until then? Last week, the devs patched in a new roguelike dungeon called the Ancient Grove. Bam.

Grim Dawn is such a good game. It’s a shame the company doesn’t have the marketing machine that the other larger competitors have. It’s such a cheap purchase too on GoG and Steam.

Eagerly awaiting the day the news goes: “Grim Dawn gets multiplayer servers and seasons/ladders”. From a purely gameplay and design perspective I like Grim Dawn better than Diablo3 and Math of Exile, but it is still in a league below until they get server support.
But in any case, I will probably end up buying the expansions one day, maybe waiting for a steam sale because it would at this point be purely for the story.

While I too enjoy it better, it doesn’t have a fraction of the recognition of Math of Exile, which is a shame since I find it very much equal to or greater than it. It is just a shame that the setting of Math of Exile subtracts so much from my enjoyment of it.

Seasons or league play would only multiply Grim Dawn’s following, which would help exponentially grow the company. That said I hate the division that it also brings, where I have to abandon old characters every new season. I’d like to imagine some middle ground exists, but I suppose I should keep it real and accept that is unlikely.

… Why yes, I was bored, how can you tell?

No reason they can’t have both server seasons and single player or even permanent server characters. One of the main reasons to have servers is not really to have seasons as such, it is to have a equal for all “competitive” (or rather comparative) environment which is THE reason millions of players keep playing PoE, D3 or even D2/mods still. Personally I get no enjoyment out of a game that is heavily based on progression and grind, if I know I can in 5 minutes download a savegame with everything maxxed and go straight to “win”.

I know they want Grim Dawn to be modded, which is great. And that can be further encouraged and combined with live servers by picking (rewarding) the best adventures to be included in regular live server updates – Free content, and new stuff every ladder for example.. that will keep interest up for both content providers and players.

I hope they fix the “file limit reached, must delete character before being able to create a new character” bug on Steam ^_^

Grim Dawn has been a pleasant surprise. I backed it on KS and just never got hooked on the initial early builds. But they have done a remarkably good job continually updating and expanding it.

This actually looks fun and think I’ll buy it as a break from MMOs.
