Path of Exile gets big numbers for Bestiary league as it tweaks capturing beasts
What does Path of Exile need to do in order to attract players? It seems like adding in a monster-capturing gameplay league did wonders, as the day-one numbers for the new Beastiary league were record-setting for the game. Players were posting queue positions and discussing the queue to enter, but the queues in question appear to have been short by all player testimony. There were just a lot of people eager to get in and start playing.

Of course, the launch of all the new mechanics also prompted numerous adjustments and hotfixes, with a rather major change allowing a three-second capture window for beasts. The developers also ran a poll regarding whether or not the game should feature nets permitting the capture of dead beasts, with the current voting indicating that these nets should be added but at a higher rarity. So it seems like a lot of people have lots of ideas about the capturing and training of a brand-new array of potential pets.

Hmm, to play or not to play this league?

I can’t say I find the league mechanic very interesting. It’s too complex for my tastes. The base game with all the past league mechanic additions and the atlas / war for the atlas is already so big and complex that I prefer if the temporary league is something more simple that doesn’t distract from the rest. Like essence, or abyss minus the abyssal depths.

I love the concept of the beast hunting

However, as a group player, this new game play mechanic really can cause the group play to stumble over itself.

POE combat is too fast and hectic to expect multiple people to be able to coordinate each capturing a creature in a 3 second window. Lag can affect you missing your trap timing. Spell effects can obscure the actual trapping event making you miss the window of opportunity to toss your trap. The sheer number of mobs all cluttered on top of each other can also do the same.

Even things like not being close to the person who starts the capture. Its common not to be shoulder to shoulder as your venture through the zones in this game, and 3 seconds is barely enough time to toss your trap, let alone move across even one screen of the zone to get to the target.

Overall, it just makes me want to stop grouping for anything if there is a chance I would want to capture beasts. My friends are of similar mindsets. Its just too easy to not get a capture because of any number of reasons when you are with others. Even people TRYING to coordinate their captures.

Until they implement something to better the grouping situation, i doubt ill be playing as much, and when I do play, it will most likely be solo.

Having lots of fun in this league. It’s not their best league (imo), but it certainly is entertaining. Keep your fingers crossed my aurabot on the hardcore league makes it to the ripe age of level 70 so I can provide some decent support for others :)

This is my favorite league so far. Now, I have a good reason for exploring every corner of every map. A new beastie! New recipes! A new entry into my Beastiary. It’s like a treasure hunt.

The Menagerie is one of the best-realized game additions I’ve seen for any game. Each section of the Beastiary has its own area. Captured beasts are in large enclosures, with a name plaque. Empty enclosures have question marks to show there is nothing in them. Einhar Frey attends your Menagerie and like almost every other NPC, you can buy and sell from him, making the Menagerie a home away from home.

The additional graphic updates are outstanding. I didn’t think after the last major graphic update the game could look any better, but it does.

And, it’s not easy capturing those beasts, particularly bosses. You have to knock them down, but not kill them. If your capture fails, they regen some health. You’ve got to be sturdy enough to survive until they have just a sliver of health and can be captured. All the rares worth capturing have special skills that project damage. I blew a couple of desirable captures with DOTs. So, I’m all for the “capture after dead” nets.

All in all, GGG has done a tremendous job with this league.

They way I do it is carefully knock them down to about a third of their health, throw the net onto them and then go all out full dps to finish them off. Rather than dying they are captured instantly once you knock off rest their health, which makes the whole capture thing a little less annoying.

Still had a few misfires if I didn’t kill something quick enough but for the most part it seems to work for me.

Not my gif I pinched it off the poe forums (credit to rexalmutt) but it shows what I mean

Apparently there is a tutorial explaining this, which was not loading properly the first hour or so of the league, so I missed it. But when I started, I didn’t know you could do this and maybe you couldn’t, because I think they patched it in.

In any event, looks like your guy is a SnB Templar. If so, mine, too, which definitely makes controlling your DPS and taking damage a lot easier than some of the squishier builds.

Been playing some more PoEkemon today and been having fun. Which I am surprised about as I was a bit sceptical to begin with when heard about it. However it provides me as a solo self found player a solid reliable-ish way to upgrade my gear. So its worth the effort to adjust my build / way I play to accommodate the league mechanics.

At the moment this is shaping up to be one of the better leagues for me and the way I play :-)

Interesting perspective. I hadn’t really thought about how it might impact me as SSF, since I haven’t yet unlocked many recipes.

I barely touched it over the weekend and found it a bit clunky, but I think some of the changes they’ve already implemented should resolve some of that. I was playing a Blight witch, which is super strong early game, making it very difficult to capture anything. I also had some crashing issues in my Menagerie, so I figured I’d give them a few days to iron things out. I also need to see if I can rebind the net to another key (I’m sure I can).

Also, PoEkémon made me chuckle, I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of that.
