RIFT Prime kicks off progression server while Trion reclaims names

25
The day is finally here. RIFT Prime, the new progression server that is bringing players back to the core game, has gone live following a period of downtime and patching. Requiring a subscription to access, Prime has stripped out most of the cash shop and all of the newer areas to provide a more level starting ground for new and veteran players.

“This server returns us to the launch of RIFT, when the level cap was 50 and all of the great Dragons awaited,” Trion posted. “Over time, we will unlock new content and levels together! There are no boosts, no supply crates, no equipment, no bags on the RIFT Prime in-game store for credits; they will be offered for in-game currency. This is the world of RIFT before free-to-play, accessible to any and all who are Patrons! It’s going to be a CHALLENGE!”

Full patch notes are up for those taking an extra minute or two before jumping into the fray. Don’t wait too long, as names have become a hot commodity in the game again. With today’s update, Trion Worlds also reclaimed abandoned names that have been attached to disused characters. Those options are now available on a first-come, first-named basis, so make sure to get yours.

And if you’re looking for a guild, there’s a forum for that. Good luck!

I dunno, I thought it captured the launch quite well. Unexpectedly long downtimes, having to take the servers off for emergency fixes, queues :D

To be fair though, Rift’s original launch wasn’t bad.

The client’s crashing a lot but hopefully that will get fixed soon. Otherwise it seems fine, obviously very busy and it’s nice to see basically everything in game (including bags) has to be crafted or bought with in game currency.

Although the souls aren’t exactly the same as vanilla, it feels like a vanilla style – slow levelling, mobs don’t die too easily etc.

allegedly turning on vsync helps with the client crashes.

i don’t think i’ve played a game this crashy in the past 10 years tho outside of trying to use non fraps recording software from time to time LOL

Is the prime service using a different client to Live then? I’ve played on Live a hell of a lot the last month or two and apart from the very occasional d/c of one client I’ve not had a single straight up crash. And I tend to run 3 clients at once!

it’s the same download but seperate entry on glyph.` seems to patch seperately too but idk.

idk how true the vsync thing is either, the one person in guild that wasn’t crashing had it on so some of the rest of us tried it but i didn’t stay on long enough to tell.

Hrm. Are folks using the 64bit version? Ironically, I had to go back to the 32bit one after they first released it because of constant crashing (I run a 64bit system so that confused me). That was quite a while ago though and I haven’t prodded the 64bit version lately.

i have no idea. i just downloaded from glyph.

i remember with archeage the steam versions was weirdly way more stable than without steam. which doesn’t really make sense given that steam just downloads glyph but ehhh.

I was there when Rift launched for sure, the rifts were amazing but then GW2 came along :)

Mind blown how its fashionable now to bash companies for gambling boxes, but noone noticed the practice before that of bloating out content to take many many months to complete, and charge per month to do it.

Your time is not precious also?

A challenge? The last time i played rift was when it had a sub and i don’t remember any challenge, it was like any other wow clone mmo (and a good one actually!)

It could be that not everyone is out to simply devour content…

Reader

Wait, companies are trying to sell their content in a mmo ? Shocking… Glad you brought that point up, I am sure nobody was aware of this.

the endgame content was absolutely brutal compared to pretty much everything else out there at the time which was tending towards the more casual. Rift raids came as a hell of a shock to some “hardcore” wow raiders.

I can’t remember a time when MMORPG players didn’t allege that content was deliberately slowed to keep us paying. That was an extremely common thread of anti-grind criticism, particularly for subscription MMOs, at least as far back as the late ’90s. I suspect MUDders before us had the same grumps.

Considering this. Never played before… but wondering if it’s going to be a bunch of vets rushing to max level with me wandering around empty low-mid level zones… after a week.

i wouldn’t recommend it

Oddly, I got a one-month sub and rolled two new characters on Vigil, only to get bumped off, come back on, and find one of my two characters deleted. It wasn’t a name change or loss of name: The whole character was gone.

Luckily the name still wasn’t taken, and I just rolled her again. But still. How much time do I want to invest on a pay-to-play server where my characters randomly get deleted after I’ve started leveling them?

I haven’t played in years, but does this happen a lot over there? This is on the brand new Prime server– not the old servers that just had the names of unplayed characters deleted.

Okay, my deleted toon was a level 3. But apparently, once players dinged level 10 (except for me), Trion accidentally sent in-game mails to those level 10s which gave out sub rewards including XP buffs, like they do on the live servers.

Apparently, they weren’t supposed to dole out any sub rewards on Vigil, the Prime server, so to fix their mistake, Trion went and deleted every toon that they accidentally mailed those sub rewards like the XP buff to– that’s what the forum mod said.

However, that doesn’t explain why they deleted my level 3, but I can tell you I didn’t receive or pick up any in-game mails or attachments for her.

Will Trion ever get their act together? ROFL. The more things change, the more they stay the same over there.

I can’t say I’ll be buying any more Rift Prime time, though. Yeesh.

nope it started before level 10.

it was one of my guildies that was getting all the server firsts every so many minutes after checking her mail from a very early stage (a few minutes after teh server went up) and a few minutes after idk which one it was after everyone in chat erupted in rage and accused her of hacking the servers came down.

we were joking that she hacked the server to get easy mode world firsts because she’s our resident stuck up linux kernel customizing person in guild and it was super hilarious to us.

anyways she was pretty annoyed that she had to start over but got back to around where she got deleted before she went to bed (she’s in europe and had work the next morning but stayed up fairly late for eu time anyway).

That guild name is epic!
Sucks that Trion is reacting by deleting characters… for their own mistake.

Just jumped on a stream to watch whats up with Prime, server promptly taken down. Sooo going for the full Rift launch experience then I see.

Chosenxeno .

Rift had one of the smoothest and best launches of any MMORPG period. It might be the best launch any MMORPG has ever had.

wtf are you talking about? Rifts original launch was the best I’ve ever seen for an MMO, it was smooth and stable with no downtime or excessive queues.

You may not like the game, but don’t be a twat and try to jump on the hate train when you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yeah I would agree it was the best I have seen too but it still came down a couple of times for a few servers on the EU side and I happened to be on one of the those. It wasn’t down long more like a reset as far a I recall. So to me seeing the streamer react the way she did when the Prime server went down was like the authentic original launch experience for me.

Also please do not accuse me of things you know nothing about I had a good couple or three years with Rift and left it with no malice or hate on my part. Hope you enjoy your Prime server experience if you happen to be playing, be well and have a nice day o7

I guess I just lost all my character names. It’s been so many years I don’t even remember what they were lol but knowing myself I must have spent a lot of time and consideration picking names for a stable of alts. I might try out the new server.

Taking the plunge on this tonight. I’ve only briefly dabbled with the intro levels of Rift last year so it will all be new (or is it old?) to me.
