The fiddle brings a new sound to Lord of the Rings Online

Now that the fiddle is a playable instrument in Lord of the Rings Online, the only question left is who will be cast to play Hobbit Tevye in the off-off-Broadway production?

While the addition of a new musical instrument might have gotten buried in all of the other patch notes for LOTRO’s Update 22, the fiddle arrives as a boon to the many player bands and minstrels who have pushed the limits of the music system for years now.

The instrument’s designer, Bill Champagne, wrote about the challenges of creating the authentic sound of the violin for the game: “When it comes to there being many different ways to play an instrument, the fiddle ranks right up towards the top of that list. As a composer I often marvel at the various amount of samples I get to play around with to create my music, and I wanted to give you that same feeling, that same ownership and control over the music that you can make in LOTRO.”

Thank you for not putting his head on Lindsey Stirling’s body. It would cause blindness.

Too bad pretty much every song in my song book sounds like a dying cat on the fiddle. The community’s going to have to make all new compositions with this instrument in mind. Playing a harp or lute track on the fiddle is bound to induce sharp stabbing pains in your ears.

I didnt know LOTR had an actual music system…

It is wonderful. You have a selection of medieval instruments like lutes, horns, etc., and you can use the number line to play them just like a real instrument in real time. Shift changes octaves.

But also, it supports scripted songs where your character can play back a midi file just like a player piano, more or less.

There are several musical groups on Landroval, the RP server I play on, and they also have Weatherstock, which is like Woodstock but around Weathertop, you know, the Amon Sul tower where the Nazgul stabbed Frodo.
